KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BELOW: Floating Docks Buoyant platforms that move with the water level. Secured to the shoreline or ground by an anchor. Ideal for tidal waterways that experience regular depth changes. Can feature decking made of wood, plastic, or aluminum. Caisson Docks (Graving Docks) Structures that can be flooded and drained. Used for allowing a ship to enter for maintenance or repairs. Can be built on land, inside dry-docks, or on floating barges. The motion of the floating dock creates inertia loading on the caisson. Dry Docks A narrow basin or vessel that can be flooded to allow a load to be floated in, then drained to allow that load to come to rest on a dry platform. Used for the construction, maintenance, and repair of ships, boats, and other watercraft. Allows for full assessment and management of the hull and all mechanical equipment without the hindrance of seawater. Ensures that the vessel remains in optimum condition and has an extended life cycle. Channel dredging in North Carolina and reusing the excavated dredge material (Beneficial Use): In addition to the opening of the channel, dredge sand was reused to substantially renourish the area of beach directly in front of the Cape Lookout. The dredged sand were emplaced to create a wide and deep beachfront. Additional dredge sand has been emplaced on Sandbag Island (also known as, “bird island”) just southeast of Harkers Island. https://lnkd.in/eTdw-YMA

𝗗𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗻 The last months, Boskalis deployed heavy machinery in the access channel to Southampton's container port. The world's largest backhoe dredger Magnor and trailing suction hopper dredger Causeway worked closely together to widen and deepen the channel in the south of the United Kingdom. The Magnor was assisted by Boskalis' pusher tugs Union Topaz and Union Onyx, which transported the dredged material from the Magnor to the offshore disposal site with the Terraferre 501 and Terraferre 502. A perfect example of close cooperation.   At about 200 meters wide, the access channel to the Port of Southampton is by no means very narrow. But as the port is looking to grow and continue to accommodate the largest container ships in the future, Boskalis Westminster has widened the access channel on behalf of the Port of Southampton. In this way, Boskalis’ capital dredging work directly contributes to keeping one of the UK's largest container ports accessible to accommodate for world trade. DREDGE UPDATE AT PARKER'S RIVER 👉 Location: Yarmouth 🗓️ Started: November 11, 2024 Progress continues on this year’s dredging of Parker’s River. Following permitting delays in previous years, we’re now targeting the channel from Station 5+00 to Station 22+50, aiming to remove 8,500 cubic yards of sand. WHAT'S HAPPENING? Sand is being placed on Sea Gull Beach to enhance the shoreline. A special diffuser helps evenly distribute the sand while minimizing water flow impact. Challenges: Weather and sea conditions have caused delays, with 5,400 cubic yards dredged so far. Next Steps: Estimated seven more days of dredging (weather permitting) to complete the project.
