"Product is still the most important P..."
One of the best pieces of marketing advice I received* in the last 12 months was that "No amount of amazing marketing will make up for a shit product.".
And you know what, it's so right.
It has become my rule for my working life. If the product isn't good, and marketing isn't allowed in the room to shape/nurture/feedback in making it better - I'm out.
So many marketers feel like that are failing, or being judged by their C-Suite for not delivering when really, no amount of advertising, PR, social, SEO, will make up for the fact that the product quality isn't there.
Luckily, I don't have that issue right now. I'm surrounded by great people delivering great products with impeccable service.
If you're a marketer, and you're feeling stressed or frustrated my advice would be to move on (as quickly as you can!). Don't hang around to let your marketing prowess be overlooked due to something that is potentially out of control.
*When I say received, I mean I read it on an Instagram post. Or LinkedIn. Or maybe on a podcast. Forgive me, but I can't remember where - it just stuck!
Ritson reviews the best beer ads whilst down the pub
Mark Ritson famously got banned as a 'Linkedin expert' by answering every question with "go down the pub and have a couple of pints" so we decided to do just that
The challenge? Take the System1 database and find out what the Top 10 Beer Ads of all time are whilst drinking beer and putting the World to rights
This isn't the most scientific approach ever taken but I think you'll still be surprised by some of the results
I have a feeling we'll be back down the pub again soon
Spectacular work by Producer James filming, recording and editing this one whilst drinking beer
Cheers
