Earlier this week, we were working on a translation for a fitout company. I’m not one to just go with my gut on things, so while reviewing, I thought I’d look up the word “fitout” to understand it better, so we could provide the client with the best possible options in Arabic. Of course, when you search for “fitout meaning in Arabic” the first thing our dear friend Google gives us is the translation from their machine translation software. I’ve talked about this previously, how GT’s work is easily “edited” by anyone, and if enough edits are made, it then shows as the “correct” translation. You don’t need to know one Arabic letter, let alone word, to tell this is nowhere near being correct 😅 - - - - - Looking for help reaching Emirati and Saudi audiences? 🇸🇦🇦🇪 I run Aurora Hikma, a digital agency specializing in Arabic translation and content creation. Have you noticed how Arabic words can change from one country to another? Last week, I had a little reminder of just how unique that can be! 👏 I was translating "dishwasher" and used "غسالة الأواني" which is what we say in my country. But then our awesome reviewer Aya Ashour stepped in and said, "Actually, we say غسالة صحون!" And guess what? In other countries, it’s known as غسالة أطباق! 😕 Three different words for the same thing—pretty interesting, right? This is one of the reasons I love being a translator. Arabic isn’t just one language; it’s a whole blend of local styles and expressions! At Aurora Hikma, we don’t just rely on Google Translate and call it a day. We take the time to understand our clients’ audience and adapt accordingly. Because sometimes, using the wrong word can lead to some pretty awkward moments! 😅 Have you ever come across different Arabic words for the same thing? What’s your first reaction to liquid spilling on your writing ✍🏼 Anger 😡 Disappointment 😓 Frustration 😫 Usually, it’s one of the above, or all rolled into a string of expletives 🫣 I’m working on reframing perspectives, though. I’d written notes for videos on these post-its, and they lay in my handbag. I don’t know what went in there (might’ve been the baby wipes) that leaked liquid onto my precious notes 📝 I looked at them and for the first time, I was surprised. The spill actually created a beautiful pattern 😍 And I reused the post-its for other notes while meeting with a client to discuss their SEO strategy and future translation projects for them ✨ Happy ending, with no stressful emotions 😌 Have you ever reframed your perspective on something you usually get stressed out by? - - - - - Looking for help reaching Emirati and Saudi audiences? 🇸🇦🇦🇪 I run Aurora Hikma, a digital agency specializing in Arabic translation and content creation. Finding specialized Arabic translators isn't easy. But it's absolutely essential for global success. Ignoring cultural nuances and industry jargon can lead to costly mistakes... Misinterpretations that damage your brand and alienate potential customers. Think about it: 1- A legal document mistranslated could derail a multi-million dollar deal. 2- A marketing campaign lost in translation might as well be money down the drain. So, how do you find the right translator? Here's what I've learned: A) Don't just settle for "Arabic." Specify the dialect and region you're targeting. Egyptian Arabic is different from Saudi Arabic. B) Look for subject matter experts. A translator specializing in medical terminology won't be the best fit for your tech startup's website. C) Ask for references and samples. Vet their experience in your industry. D) Test them with a small project. See how they handle your specific jargon and tone. Remember, a good translator is an investment, not just an expense. They're the bridge between your brand and a whole new world of opportunity. Don't cut corners.

From 'Hello' to '👋': The Emoji Takeover of Language Have you noticed how differently people talk these days? It's like our language is getting a makeover. Remember when we used full sentences and proper punctuation in texts? Now, it's all about speed. We're cutting words, using tons of emojis, and making up new slang every day. Young people are leading this change. They can have whole conversations using just a few symbols or words. It's impressive and sometimes confusing! Why is this happening? We're all busy and there's so much to say. We're trying to share our thoughts as quickly as possible. But is this new way of talking good or bad? Are we losing the art of conversation, or just finding new ways to connect? I'm really scared that one day in the future, I'll open a book and find emojis instead of words! What do you think about how language is changing? Do you love the new lingo or miss the old ways? -------- Hello! 👋🏼 I'm Asma, junior translator at Aurora Hikma. TRANSLATIONS ON FOOD LABELS 🏷️ One of the tricky pitfalls a lot of people fall into is faulty translations on product labels, that waste their time and money. 💸 Especially critical with food product labels, label translation is both the easiest and the hardest type of translation work I’ve handled. Easy because it’s usually simple words, with a few more obscure ingredients here and there in an entire batch of labels from one client. Yet still, I find that I get quite a few requests from clients whose product labels have been rejected by Dubai Municipality. This is where the hard part comes in. Most often, the rejections are due to outright straightforward bad translation. Other times, they’re less straightforward, and you have to go on a problem-solving mission to try and understand what exactly is wrong. 🔍 Usually it’s because one of the more obscure ingredients was translated incorrectly because the same word could mean two different things, and translators don’t always ask clients for more information about what they’re working on. Sometimes, it’s due to the product name being a little too creative for the translator’s abilities. Whatever the reason, I’m happy to say that we’ve worked to fix these issues before and most of our translated labels are approved in the first round by Dubai Municipality. 📋 - - - - - Looking for help reaching Emirati and Saudi audiences? 🇸🇦🇦🇪 I run Aurora Hikma, a digital agency specializing in Arabic translation and content creation.
