The US Department of Energy has released a national definition for zero-emissions buildings. This standardized definition provides consistency and clarity to the #netzero transition, supporting the real estate value chain in achieving and identifying the lowest-carbon buildings. ULI's Marta Schantz, Co-Executive Director of the Randall Lewis Center for Sustainability in Real Estate said: "This move by the federal government is a step forward in encouraging and accelerating the building sector’s journey to net zero, laying the crucial groundwork for the industry’s broader strategy to meet climate goals, ensuring all stakeholders have a unified understanding of what constitutes a zero emissions building." Buildings decarbonisation can make or break the Green Deal

📖 As our public and private sectors are working to make Greater Manchester a greener city-region, our partners Civic Engineers and Bruntwood have supported Manchester Climate Change Agency and Greater Manchester Combined Authority with two new industry reports that will be key to helping Manchester become a zero carbon city by 2038. 🏗️ The ‘Accelerating Net Zero: Retrofit of Commercial Buildings in Greater Manchester’ report led by Bruntwood will help accelerate retrofit action in the commercial building sector in Greater Manchester. 🏙️ The ‘Net Zero New Buildings: Shaping Manchester’s Local Plan’ report led by Civic Engineers explores how local planning policy help reduce the city’s emissions from new buildings. The City of London Corporation has published its third annual #ClimateAction Strategy progress report. Key achievements between April 2023 and March 2024 include (since the 2018/19 baseline): 🏭 23% reduction in net #carbon #emissions across our entire value chain (including investments and supply chain) 🌍 65% reduction in net carbon emissions in our own operations 🌱 30% decrease in our financial investment carbon emissions 💡 Energy savings in key buildings amounting to over 1.5 million kWh per year = 1,300 tonnes of carbon every year – or around £1m in energy costs. There is still much more to do to reach our 2040 #netzero goals. It's a privilege to be involved in the pilot of the UK's first Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard, launched last week. Socius is proud to have sponsored this industry-wide initiative, led by Better Buildings Partnership, BRE, The Carbon Trust, CIBSE, The Institution of Structural Engineers, LETI, RIBA, RICS, and UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) and looks forward to further engagement. Fantastic to today see the launch of the much anticipated and first science-led, net-zero carbon buildings standard here in the UK #UKNetZeroCarbonBuildingStandard Our ESG team here at Jones Hargreaves will be getting to grips with this pilot version straightaway, which is now available for use on projects. This coincides nicely with Jones Hargreaves' updated Net Zero Auditing and Asset Decarbonisation consultancy services. We see the launch of The UK Net Zero Carbon Building Standard as a significant step forward for the industry. I'm personally looking forward to providing an update on how we’re utilising this in due course.
