As we enter spring in the Midwest, the chances of striking a deer with your vehicle increases. While not presenting quite the same risks as in the fall, there are spikes in collisions as deer resettle into their summer range and spread out for the upcoming fawning season. Some tips to help reduce the likelihood or impact of of striking a deer with your car: 1) Avoid distractied driving. Keep alert and aware of your surroundings, especially at sunset and sunrise. 2) Know where deer are most likely to frequent and keep your speed at posted limits or lower to increase response time. 3) Use high beams in low light conditions when other drivers aren’t present. 4) Do not swerve to avoid a deer! Changing lanes abruptly can cause loss of control and make matters worse. 5) Avoid the gadgets like whistles. They’ve not been proven to work and could provide a false sense of security.

OH DEER! Deer are especially active in the fall — particularly from mid-October through November — during their mating season. Deer are most active during sunrise and sunset. Deer, and other wildlife, are most active during prime commuting hours, roughly from 5 to 8 a.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. Pay attention to deer crossing signs. Take precautions when driving at night If there is no oncoming traffic, turn on your high beams: You’ll not only be able to see clearer, but you’ll have a greater chance of spotting a deer from a distance. Do not swerve to avoid a deer collision. By swerving you put yourself at risk for a worse collision with another vehicle or running off the road. Stay in your lane and try to slow down.
