On Point: Innovation & Startups Julie Garlikov on improving the user experience in diagnostic testing. - Innovation is often rooted in novel technologies, but it only becomes game changing when it is combined with simple solutions that provide a better user experience. - The current user experience for diagnostic testing is terrible. Make an appointment. Take off work. Go to a doctor. Doctor refers you to a lab. Go to the lab. Wait for the result. You could be waiting to find out if you have cancer. - Sherlock Biosciences has incredible technology – synthetic biology, CRISPR, AI. Julie Garlikov knows that, but she also knows consumers don’t really care. They care about the new experience. Get a test. Take a test. Know the result. - Watch this video https://bit.ly/3TcgkQu Watch the full episode https://bit.ly/3t5xVPs MassMEDIC

Can AI give your product a competitive advantage? 🤖 🤔 According to Lucas Nivon, CEO of Cyrus Biotechnology, it’s all about the innovation mindset. He warns against getting stuck on AI-driven tools just for the sake of them. “It’s less about #AI and more about making valuable products in the real world.” When Lucas spoke to Scott’s AI in #ProductDevelopment class this past spring at the University of Washington Bothell, he touched on AI's unique capabilities in #biotech and how those capabilities needed to be mapped to real clinical needs. “If you’re going to work in biologics, your new product has to be at the intersection of the two.” Although #genAI is transformative, its power is magnified tenfold or more when coupled with traditional AI and physics-based tools. Over time, AI tools will likely surpass traditional tools (it’s already beginning to happen), but in biologics discovery, it’s more about the clinical impact than the diversity of your models or ability to generate data. Lucas, thank you for letting us peek behind the Cyrus Biotech curtains and for teaching our future engineers about the importance of both a skill set and a mindset when it comes to AI-driven innovation.

Recently had a chat with a physician and learned about how evolution mirrors technological innovation. There are two types of evolution: Drift and Shift. Drifting evolution is all about incremental improvements, taking what was and making the next version better. Shifting evolution is about step-leaps towards something altogether different. When a shift occurs, organisms that were drifting often can no longer compete as the velocity of their drift is not fast enough to catch up to the shift (e.g., when the flu virus shifts, the vaccine loses efficacy). There are great parallels to evaluating start-up ideas and thinking about innovation. Shifts like Mobile were pivotal in shaping our technology landscape today. Electrification is another shift well underway. Many believe AI represents another such shift. In my opinion the key takeaway comparing evolution and innovation is: If you can, it's nearly always better to work on something that's part of a shift. When you're drifting, you're almost certainly competing directly against an incumbent... and incumbents have become very good at value capture in the tech sector over the past few decades (probably a subject of a future post!). I was today years old when I learned that around 45% of patients in the U.S. are forced to visit the ER first instead of scheduling a doctor’s appointment. Intel Liftoff member Aleph Innovations is taking aim at critical bottlenecks in healthcare, and using AI to improve outcomes. Their exciting solutions prove that technology can drive systemic change, over and above the efficiency and cost saving improvements that AI is known for. Aleph Innovation is one of our most ambitious startups - and they’re at the beginning of their journey. They’re focusing on enabling more precise healthcare now, but they’re also looking ahead to other big picture goals like decarbonization. The Future of Biotech: AI & Smart Funding Looking at the biotech landscape of 2024, it's clear that there are learnings from past 'glory days'. But what remains unchanged is the pursuit of that transformative molecule with great therapeutic promise. The biotech playground has morphed dramatically, demanding more astute and strategic funding approaches. And yet, amid this tougher environment, two catalysts emerge: AI and stable funding environments. Tracking back to a recent Financial Times Live event, experts highlighted the change occurring. AI is no longer a futuristic buzzword; it's a practical tool ramping up in drug discovery. With big pharma's significant cash reserves eyeing de-risked late-stage assets, a potential 'tension' brews between them and private equity's investment strategies. It's a fascinating balancing act between innovation and commercial foresight. #Biotech #AIInnovation #FundingStrategies 🌐
