🔦 on research: Eric Marvin, DO, neurosurgeon, is working on research that could reduce side effects and surgical interventions for older adults with chronic subdural hematomas. Dr. Marvin, in collaboration with third-year neurosurgery resident Kristine Ravina, MD, are recipients of our Research Acceleration Program (RAP) award: a grant that funds our employees to start clinical, biomedical or behavioral research projects. When older adults experience a head injury—even a relatively minor one—blood can collect between the skull and the surface of the brain, where it can cause symptoms ranging from headache to paralysis or coma. Dr. Marvin's research could potentially lead to the development of a sustained local drug delivery release system for treating this condition. This new treatment option could help patients avoid additional surgeries after an initial operation. There is also potential to reduce hospital stays and improve patient outcomes. Stay tuned here on LinkedIn for more RAP recipient highlights! Happy to Announce My First Publication I am excited to announce the publication of my paper, "Vasospasm and subsequent stroke from paraneoplastic syndrome in a pediatric patient with an intracranial mature teratoma: a case report," in the prestigious journal Child's Nervous System as the second author. This study highlights a rare and intricate case where an intracranial mature teratoma in a pediatric patient led to vasospasm and subsequent stroke. Our findings underscore the importance of recognizing and understanding paraneoplastic syndromes in pediatric patients. I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to Dr. Matthew D. Smyth, Dr. S. Hassan A. Akbari, and the neurosurgery team at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital for their exceptional support and collaboration. Healthcare Innovation: Norton Neuroscience Institute is the first and only facility in Kentucky to offer a game-changing treatment for essential tremor and tremor-dominant Parkinson's disease - MRI-guided high-frequency focused ultrasound. This incisionless surgery uses precise ultrasound beams to create a small lesion in the brain, providing immediate and dramatic relief of hand tremors and other symptoms. Best of all, it doesn't require anesthesia or a hospital stay! The $2.8 million in funding from the NORTON HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION INC has allowed Norton Neuroscience Institute to acquire this cutting-edge technology. Their team of stereotactic and functional neurosurgeons are expertly trained to perform this procedure, further solidifying their reputation as the regional leader in advanced neurological care. If you or someone you know is dealing with essential tremor or tremor-dominant Parkinson's disease, I encourage you to seek out more information about this transformative treatment. Together, we can raise awareness and ensure those in need receive the care they deserve! #WorldStrokeDay is a reminder to us all to increase #awareness on #strokesymptoms, #stroketreatment #mechanicalthrombectomy AND #strokeprevention. #AtrialFibrillation, is a well-known risk factor of #ischemicstroke. Timely detection using long-term cardiac rhythm monitoring in eligible patients and treatment with #anticoagulation is critical to prevent a future, often fatal #ischemicstroke. Very excited to share our latest study, published in Seizure: European Journal of Epilepsy! 🎉 We explored the relationship between anti-seizure medications (ASMs) and cardiac arrhythmias, shedding light on important considerations for epilepsy care. Here’s what we found: 💊 Carbamazepine, lamotrigine, and lacosamide were associated with fewer cardiac arrhythmias. ❌ No ASM was linked to an increased risk of arrhythmias 💓 QTc intervals remained stable with ASM use—no significant changes detected. Our analysis included 3,695 patients undergoing long-term monitoring with EEG and 3-lead ECG, and the results are clear: 🧠 ASMs not only manage seizures but may also have potential cardiac benefits. This makes sense as hearts have lots of neural activity as well! 📈 These findings open the door to new discussions about the potential antiarrhythmic properties of ASMs, but further studies are needed to confirm these insights and understand the mechanisms behind them. 👉 Check out the full article here: https://lnkd.in/guQH4X2d #Epilepsy #Cardiology #Research #EEG #Neurology

Neonatal seizures are difficult to detect and diagnose which can be detrimental to the immature brain of a newborn and negatively impact long-term neurological outcomes. In this Brain Bit, Senior Clinical IT Sales Specialist Dan Strelow explains how the Olympic Brainz Monitor (OBM) can be a critical tool in the NICU for detecting seizures, including subclinical seizures, to diagnose conditions earlier and more accurately. Strengthen your clinical knowledge with more quick tips from Brain Bits. https://hubs.li/Q02KRp1Q0 To learn more about OBM, your trusted partner in the NICU, visit: https://hubs.li/Q02KRB070 #neonatalcare #NICU #neonatology #brainmonitoring
