I can’t stand musicals. People bursting into song in the middle of confusing storylines. Memories of asking is it time to go home yet. Shudder…! A long held view. And yet last night I felt myself grinning like a Cheshire cat, swaying in my seat, tapping my feet. At a musical! It got me thinking about comfort zones. Stepping beyond the confines of familiarity is similar to embarking on any transformative or change journey; it's not just about discomfort but also about growth. Embracing the stretch, though initially daunting, is where the magic happens. It's in those moments of unease that we discover our true potential and unearth opportunities for innovation and advancement. While venturing beyond our comfort zone may evoke feelings of uncertainty, it's also the space where we cultivate resilience, adaptability, and creativity. Less is more! While creating a story, it's easy to think that more visuals and more effects will make a bigger impact. This is not always true. Overusing b-roll can actually take away from the story. When you cover up too much of the main footage, you miss the micro-expressions - the subtle but powerful emotions on someone's face that truly connect with the audience. These small moments are where the passion and authenticity shine through. The same applies to the power of sound. Musical imaging helps set the mood and it should never overpower the story. Non-distracting musical imaging can enhance the narrative without stealing the spotlight. An example would be overpowering drums, multiple lead synthesizers and heavy bass. The goal is to tell a story that resonates, not one that overwhelms. Keep it simple, authentic and let the story speak for itself.
