Incredible scenes in Liverpool yesterday for the naming ceremony of Cunard’s new cruise ship MS Queen Anne. (I took this pic from Birkenhead across the river)   At almost a third of a kilometre long and boasting 67,584 horsepower, you might think that this steel-hulled leviathan would stir grumblings from an environmentalist like me. After all, I spend my hols camping off grid.   But I’ve softened my position in recent years. And I now believe there’s a balance to be struck between preserving our environment and maintaining our quality of life. ⚖ Should that balance include cruising the world’s oceans? I don’t know. But I do know that the shipping industry has made huge progress in shrinking its environmental footprint, developing remarkable new technologies, including: ·       Air lubrication systems that ease a ship’s hull through the water ·       Wind Assisted Ship Propulsion (WASP) ·       On-board solar power ·       Hyper-efficient engines running on low-sulphur fuels ·       Exhaust gas cleaning systems   And maritime eco-pioneers like Windward Shipping have partnered with Greenify to fund amazing environmental projects around the globe, including ocean-bound plastic recovery and vital reforestation work. 🌳🌳🌳   I won’t be booking passage on MS Queen Anne any time soon.
