From his early days as a deckhand in the Caribbean to winning the prestigious ACREW Best Captain award, Captain Perkin’s narrative breaks stereotypes and fosters inclusivity every step of the way. It is a powerful reminder of what we can achieve with tenacity, courage, and a supportive community. Thank you ESTELA YACHTING PALMA for another great series of breakfast seminars this year at the Palma International Boatshow with again interesting subjects. After we got educated last year about the finer details and background of lithium ion batteries, this year had #Sustainability on day 1, followed by a great panel (and moderator, thank you Erica Lay!) discussing crew retention, mental health, salaries and crew matters. The last day was dedicated to the future of fuel and propulsion. As a Captain and Chief Officer, all three subjects have my interest, but as without my crew I would be (and go) nowhere, this one was of particular interest. Getting new crew starts way ahead of what we as an industry do: we need to work together as an industry to communicate better about the positive things we do and work on our global image. This starts not just with good communication, but with workshops or presentations at schools so kids are aware of the possibilities of a career at sea, and more specifically in yachting. It gets me back to one of my favourite quotes, “you can’t be what you can’t see”. In a stark reminder of what can go wrong, usually when you are not expecting it, we wanted to share this video (with permissions) of the importance of wearing the appropriate life saving equipment including kill cords when out on the water in a vessel. This incident occurred at Oreston Quay slipway late last year – the person on the boat, and bystanders on the quay, are all very lucky to still be alive. It was by sheer luck that the area shown wasn’t being used by other water users at the time. Slipways are for the launch and recovery of craft, and others should be aware of the risks in and around the slipways at all times. The video shows how quickly events can change, and on this occasion, no one lost their life, due to luck, and the swift medical response of the public, and emergency services. It can’t be said enough, but thank you to the first responders, harbour staff and blue light services who all attended this particular incident.
