Make way for Gen Z, the digital natives armed with an innovative mindset are here to change the world. I was inspired by the passion and innovation of aspiring pre-college Gen Z entrepreneurs at the recent Youth Entrepreneurship Summit (YES 2024) organized by iStart Valley, where I was invited to deliver a keynote. Six startups that made it to the finals showed their passion to tackle global challenges through innovations like silicon-based quantum processors (Quantum Fab), carbon-neutral energy for the underserved (Light Ray), AI-driven health diagnostics (Lesion Detector), AI-based music therapy for neurological disorders (NeuroTunes), aircraft safety systems (FRS), and phones as digital reading glasses (Resolve). It is a long list of energetic organizing committee to recognize, guided by experienced Manjunath (MJ). 🔬 Yesterday's work delved into the intricate topic of chorioamnionitis—an inflammation of the fetal membranes with potentially severe implications for both mother and baby. It's a subject close to my heart, considering my decades-long dedication to women's health and my extensive background as a lecturer in anatomy and embryology. Yesterday I was researching the impact of multiple vaginal examinations and prolonged labor on chorioamnionitis. I was asking how it can lead to various complications, including neurological and respiratory issues for the baby, and even, in some cases, tragic outcomes. For the mother, the risks range from endometrial inflammation to sepsis, respiratory distress, and rarely, mortality. My role as a consultant to a stealth biotech company allows me to leverage my passion and expertise in women's health to drive innovation and progress in the field. Important article by some highly experienced and thoughtful authors. These tips are easily applicable to other fields of medical devices but certainly crucial for neurotech startups. The question of developing an approach to intellectual property really resonates for me particularly when it comes to developing hardware for brain implants. Developing hardware in house gives you much more control of the product and IP but at a great expense and may make it more challenging to achieve market acceptance. I would certainly encourage all founding teams to make sure they have a discussion on each of these points and if they don't have an answer for them at least know who they are going to turn to for answers and at what stage in their roadmap.
