New Blog Post! What are the challenges of establishing your day rate? I've been a freelancer for over 25 years now, and it is something that I struggled with until recently —for lots of different reasons. I have used various spreadsheets and calculators, taken advice from peers, second-guessed budgets, and just said yes to the fee on offer—even when I knew the value I bring to an organisation is much higher and that I need a higher rate to bring in a sustainable income. Your freelance rates might be the reason you are not landing great clients! A lil story time- When I started freelancing about five years ago, it wasn’t all great. I struggled to land good clients and often questioned myself, “Is it my work? Is it because I don’t know the right people?" But the last two years made me realize, the real issue wasn’t what I thought. It was my rates. I still remember this one conversation with a potential client. They told me, “We’ve found someone else who can do it for a lot less.” I tried convincing a bit, let's be honest I wasn't great at that. You know how stingy clients can be and I was too desperate to let them go. So I panicked and gave them a huge discount. It wasn’t a one time thing either, I repeatedly compromised on my rates just to get projects. And when I look back today I know that's where I was going wrong. 1. I wasn’t sure about the value I brought to the table. 2. I lacked confidence and wasn’t ready to let go of clients. 3. My clients didn’t understand (or appreciate) my value. But things have changed. Today, I’m clear about my worth. I know the impact I create for my clients, and I don’t hesitate to negotiate But if it means slashing my rates significantly, I walk away.
