The biggest problem with most M&A post-acquisition is integration and today that most often means integration of people and technology. It was my Mother’s birthday at the weekend and we had a family gathering where I was in the role of son, father, uncle, brother etc. In our personal lives we often switch seamlessly between multiple roles, instinctively understanding that we are sitting in multiple cultures, with different responsibilities and different authorities. But when we face complex situations like this in our work lives, many of us struggle. Post acquisition is a classic example of a situation where people feel at sea with where they fit in, and that uncertainty often has an impact of productivity as we invest our time and energy worrying rather than doing our job. Tech is the same. We strive for a situation where my teenage son can share effective tech with my 81-year-old mum without the need for translation. They communicate well and both listen, but this takes time and effort and a willingness to learn on both sides. To create real value, we need effective teams who all work together and effective tech that unites our purpose. This is the foundation for future value creation. As with a family, if a set of organisations do not come together with a common purpose and a common shared foundation (ie the tech) we end up with that situation of everybody dreading Christmas and nobody listening to each other. As a psychologist with a history as a CIO and a CFO I still look at the people first. I can create a situation where my Mum can teach my son financial skills and he can share tech innovation with her by brokering the conversation through an understanding of their perspectives. Too often in business we fail with this simple understanding that everyone has their perspective, and they see their job but don’t often adapt to their new role. Merging organisations isn’t just about culling duplicate roles, it is often about re-organising the roles effectively, rationalising the tech to suit those roles and creating that shared vision. #M&A #PeopleFirst #ValueCreation

Your organizational knowledge should include a broad list of topics: highs and lows, products and services (historical and current), mergers and acquisitions—the list goes on. And many of these details aren’t formally documented anywhere. Yes, of course, you can read news articles and press releases and shareholder reports, but the company’s internal goings-on over time are rarely recorded coherently in writing, let alone easy to find, especially for a new employee.
