A new European Union consortium, known as the #PREVAIL project, has been established to accelerate the development of #nextgeneration #edgeAI #technologies. Coordinated by four leading #research and #technology organizations (#RTOs) across Europe — CEA-Leti (France), Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (Germany), imec (Belgium), and VTT (Finland)—the project aims to create a #networked, #multihub #platform for #prototype #chip fabrication in #advancedartificialintelligence technology (#AAItechnology). Here are the key details: Purpose and Goals: The PREVAIL project aims to position Europe with an easy-access, advanced #manufacturing #infrastructure that enables users to #create early #research samples of #innovativeAI and #trustworthyAI #products. It focuses on providing #highperformance, #lowpower #edgecomponents to support the #massivedataprocessing #requirements of #AIApplications. The project contributes to the EU’s #digitaltransformation and aligns with the goals of the #European #ChipsAct. Infrastructure and Capabilities: Leveraging the RTOs’ advanced 300 mm fabrication, design, and test facilities, the project establishes the Testing and Experimentation Facility for Edge-AI Hardware (TEF Edge AI HW). This facility will validate new high-performance, low-power edge-AI components and support the fabrication of early research prototype samples for testing in innovative edge-AI applications. Collaboration and Access: The consortium collaborates with selected SMEs, industrial partners of the RTOs, and academic labs to prepare early designs. The project plans to open access widely for EU designers by May 2026. While 80% of the project’s budget targets equipment for edge-AI device design, testing, and fabrication, it also reinforces the readiness of the RTOs to equip their new pilot lines for developing 3D integration technologies. BLACK SEMICONDUCTOR SECURES FUNDING TO LAUNCH NEW SEMICONDUCTOR TECHNOLOGY IN EUROPE Black Semiconductor, a spin-off and current partner of the Graphene Flagship, has secured EUR 254.4 million in funding to launch groundbreaking semiconductor technology in Europe. The German federal government and the State of North-Rhine-Westphalia are backing this innovation with EUR 228.7 million, driving forward a new generation of graphene-based chips. Additionally, Black Semiconductor raised EUR 25.7 million in equity funding from Porsche Ventures, Project A Ventures, and other notable investors. This transformative technology aims to solve connectivity barriers and significantly enhance computing power and efficiency. The funding will support the first mass production of graphene-based semiconductors, bolstering Europe’s technological sovereignty and creating new high-tech jobs in Aachen, Germany. This milestone is set to revolutionize the chip industry and strengthen the semiconductor value chain in Europe. More than 700 leaders from governments and the semiconductor and photonic chip industry are meeting in Eindhoven during PIC Summit Europe 2024 to discuss the future of the industry. The summit features keynotes and panels with leaders including the Acting Director Enabling and Emerging Technologies of the EU Commission Gustav Kalbe, Acting Director-General of Economic Affairs Tjerk Opmeer, Airbus Head of Technology Sytze Kampen, Principal Technology Analyst at Sony Faisal Kamran, and Head of Silicon Photonics at Nokia Bell Labs Nicolas Fontaine. Gustav Kalbe said, “You can see how ubiquitous applications for integrated photonics are becoming. They’re becoming a fundamental building block. The need is ever-increasing, and ever-critical because photonics underpins so many other technologies.” Eelko Brinkhoff, CEO of PhotonDelta, said: “Photonic chip technology offers solutions to big societal challenges in areas such as mobility, energy, climate change, food, and health. The hurdle we need to overcome is bringing these solutions to market faster. Yesterday the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology announced the creation of the National Semiconductor Institute.   Members of the UK Chips Coalition, as the industry voice for the #semiconductor sector, have called on UK Government to ensure this announcement turned into action. Through the open letter shared yesterday with the Secretary of State, the Chips Coalition have shared their belief that this Institute should be authoritative, independent, and an empowered body that will bring together wider UK industry as users of semiconductors, alongside the international and domestic semiconductor industry. Last Thursday marked a major milestone as #PIXEurope, a new European pilot line for Advanced Photonic Integrated Circuits (PIC), was launched. 💥 Aiming to reinforce the European Union’s commitment to strengthening its #semiconductor and #photonics landscape, the Chips Joint Undertaking (Chips JU) has now officially entered negotiations to establish PIXEurope. PIXEurope set out to become the world’s first open-access ecosystem for PICs, uniting Europe’s leading research organizations. This pilot line will drive innovation across the PIC value chain, from chip design and fabrication to packaging and reliability testing. With a total project investment of €380 million, €133 million is earmarked the Netherlands, with €66.3 million coming directly from the EU Chips Act. The EU Chips Act (2023) centers on three pillars—capacity building, strategic autonomy, and resilience—to elevate Europe’s semiconductor industry. With this funding, the Netherlands aims to further boost the PIC ecosystem by expanding production capacity and deepening expertise in photonic chip manufacturing. 🏭 This announcement underscores the growing importance of integrated photonic chips in the semiconductor industry, especially in light of the rapid rise in AI demand. These chips are critical for sustainable advancements, such as offering faster speeds, greater capacity, and lower energy consumption in data communication, quantum computing, and enable new sensing applications across healthcare, food, and mobility sectors.
