Did you know that 55% of employees report feeling stressed when asked to complete tasks outside their job descriptions❓ This stress often leads to decreased productivity and morale. Maintaining clear boundaries and expectations around each role is key to preserving focus and fostering well-being. Why do employees feel energized on day one only? It’s a question that leaders need to reflect on deeply. New employees walk in on their first day with enthusiasm, passion, and the drive to succeed. They’ve chosen to join the organization because they see potential, both in themselves and in the company. Yet, a few months later, that same energy fades. Engagement drops, and that once-motivated individual now feels disconnected, even miserable. Why? According to Gallup, only 13% of employees in Europe feel engaged at work. This means that nearly 9 out of 10 people are operating without a real sense of purpose or fulfilment. That’s a staggering statistic, and it’s a wake-up call for all leaders. This decline in engagement often stems from a misalignment between expectations and reality. Employees are sold on a vision during recruitment, but when they step into their roles, they often encounter a very different environment. Promises of growth, empowerment, and a positive work culture may fall flat in the face of rigid hierarchies, unclear goals, or a lack of support. Leaders, the responsibility lies with us. It’s not enough to inspire during onboarding—we must continually nurture that spark. Employee engagement isn’t something that should only be addressed when it becomes a problem; it needs constant attention from day one and every day after. ❓ When was the last time you asked your team members how they’re feeling, not just about their tasks but about their overall experience at work? ❓ Are we providing the tools and resources they need to thrive, or are we unknowingly stifling their potential? ❓ Do we reward initiative and creativity, or are we too focused on micromanaging outcomes? A motivated workforce thrives in environments where communication, trust, and growth are prioritised. If we want our employees to remain engaged long after their first day, we need to invest in their development, create clear career paths, and foster a culture where they feel heard, supported, and valued. Reflect on this: What more can we do to keep that day-one energy alive?
