#FinanceFriday ok, maybe that’s not a thing… but should it be? I’ve had a couple students routinely ask, “do PTs make more than OTs?” I want to know your answer in the comments, but here’s my go to… and correct me if I’m wrong 🤷♀️ - PTs and OTs bill similar and sometimes the same codes, which are often reimbursed the same whether the service was delivered by an OT or PT. - PTs (in general) collect more easily quantifiable data, like range of motion, endurance, and pain. This has yielded strong evidence to support referral to therapy. This is more challenging to replicate in OT when we look at occupational performance and the ease in which someone can complete a task. - PTs and OTs can look extremely similar in some settings, like hand therapy, with strong evidence to behind treatment and providers recognize the need for referral to therapy. - PTs have worked extremely hard at fine tuning their marketing messaging over the years about what their profession can offer, yielding amazing referral streams. My answer is YES, in some settings, PTs are paid more than OTs because of the short timeline to yield an ROI. Does that mean as OTs we can’t make equivalent or more? No. I think our time is coming, but we have some work to do. We need continued work around our brand messaging as a profession, sharing the amazing research we do have that backs up the OT lens, continued research to add to the evidence base, and ongoing lobbying efforts to put OT at the forefront.
