Emissions across the Building Lifecycle 🌎 Buildings are significant contributors to urban emissions, accounting for an average of 35% of total emissions, which increases to 70% in C40 cities across the Global North. The primary source of these emissions is the energy used for power, heating, and cooling. In addition to operational use, the construction sector is a major emitter, responsible for more than 23% of the world's total greenhouse gas emissions. This places it alongside the food sector as one of the largest sources of consumption-based emissions in C40 cities. The diagram provides a comprehensive view of the building lifecycle, highlighting the disparity between embodied and operational emissions. Embodied emissions, which arise from the extraction, transport, and manufacturing of building materials, represent 20 to 50% of a building's whole-life emissions. Understanding and addressing both operational and embodied emissions are crucial for sustainable urban development. This entails integrating sustainability into every stage of building design and construction to minimize the overall environmental footprint.
