Fifteen years ago I walked through the doors of DWF (UK and Ireland) to start my new role as a solicitor in the regulatory team. Hot of the tails of the massive cases of Porter and HTM that DWF had just done, I knew I had exciting times ahead in building my H&S experience, as well as bringing my transport expertise into the firm. I recall telling Steffan Groch upon arrival that they’d have to sack me to get me out, having hated the process of resigning and leaving my previous role at Aaron & Partners LLP (all far too emotional!) and I’m not sure that Steffan or I necessarily realised how serious I was with that comment, and here we are 15 years later. Why DWF for so long? I could take more than the max word count to answer this. In short- the people. I am lucky to have the best colleagues in the world. Everywhere that I turn are normal, decent, hard-working people who all want to champion each other and do the right thing. It helps that our team gets the best work, for the best clients and I can’t imagine doing the job anywhere else. DWF is a true meritocracy, I hear too many stories of female friends feeling that they have been held back due to their gender or their choices to have a family. I feel exceptionally lucky to have spent the majority of my career in a firm that embraces diversity and allows me to straddle the difficult path of being a proud SEN mum and have a massively fulfilling career - trying to balance both isn’t easy, but I’m given the freedom and support to make that work. There’s hopefully a lot more excitement and challenge ahead for me in my DWF career - I can say one thing for sure, there’s never a dull day! And whilst I’m at it, we currently are recruiting - H&S or transport lawyers - please do give me a shout for a chat! https://lnkd.in/e2JHxFry

A number of years back, when I was just getting into Recruiting, I reached out to a top biller who seemed like they were making placements every other day. Being the inquisitive fella that I am, I reached out to pick his brain. I told him that I was new and that I'd love to learn more about his process and what he does that makes him so special. I'll never forget the words he said after that... "You're on your own, kid. Good luck." *Phone Hangs Up* I won't lie, I was pretty deflated by that. In hindsight, it was the best thing he could have said to me. And maybe he knew that? Either way, I can see now that the the fire hardens the sword. Nothing he could have said would have prepared me for the the challenges this business throws at you. Sometimes baptism by fire is the only way. NOW... All of that is not to say that I haven't had some amazing people in my corner and offering guidance, because I certainly did and still do. But you realize quick in this world that it's just you. No one is going to pick up the phone for you, spend countless hours in the office with you, be there for the early morning and late nights, and they definitely aren't putting food on your table when you're having a down year. I don't know who needed to hear this, but if you're someone who did, remember this- The difference between success and failure is the amount of time you spend feeling sorry for yourself. It's a hard pill to swallow, but the sooner you do, the better. My experience is specific to Recruiting, but this is very relevant to a lot of industries, insurance being a big one of those.

It's incredibly frustrating when you're trying to operate with integrity and do right by people and see your competitors (large, established companies) operate like snakes... What does that look like in the world of recruiting? Yesterday I had to tell a candidate I could no longer represent her on a role we were working on together because a scummy recruiter had already submitted her resume - unsolicited and without her permission - to the prospective employer. Since she did not even know this job existed, she was surprised - and pissed. A great client/friend talked me off a ledge and reminded me I'm making a difference, and to keep fighting the good fight. He also reminded me that in any profession, you'll compete against snakes, and it takes the bigger (wo)man to do it with integrity anyway. Heck, insurance producing was no different. 🤷♀️ I've said it before and I'll say it again - if you're a company engaging a recruiter, it's not only about who has the most connections or touts the fastest results... 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬. Unfortunately, much like insurance submissions, "first in wins". How do you think this candidate is feeling about her experience with this recruiting company (and maybe even this employer now) as a result? 🤔 Karma will get them eventually. #karma #integrity #frustration #insurance #insurancecareer

Conveyancers... do you need a home working role in a modern, forward thinking and most importantly, caring business? 📈 READ ON... Yesterday, I spoke with a conveyancer who had experienced the recent misfortune of expecting to start a new role, but being informed that the company she was expecting to join had made a "business decision" not to hire her, and several other people 🔟 I was shocked, but admittedly not as shocked as I'm sure she must have felt when she received this news. Hopefully, her day improved substantially when we booked her in for an interview at Simplify ☀ If you've been left in a similar situation, we're recruiting for experienced Conveyancers, now, and if you're successful at interview you can start within 2 weeks 🔜 Simply click this link to apply https://lnkd.in/eBxp9UPe Get in touch 📱 07510 589 100 📨 andrew.canning@simplify.co.uk #careers #hiring #conveyancing #legal #innovate #inspire #care

Thoughts for Tuesday…. Being in the office I learn so much by listening to my colleagues on the phone. I pick up excellent tips as they connect and build rapport with clients and candidates. It just goes to show, you are never finished learning, no matter what your tenure is with a company. 🤓 #Wilmington #Delaware #Backintheoffice #Officelearning #Neverstoplearning #Marketing #Sales #Recruiting #Financialservices #Banks #Administrativehiring #Customerservice #Humanresources #HR #Roberthalf #CFA #Finance #Relationships #Listenandlearn #Phonetips #Onsite
