The expression “Last but not Least” was never more true than when the startups in PharmStars' current cohort were joined last week by Mark T. Rutledge, PhD of Sumitomo Pharma America, Inc. (SMPA) for the final Fireside Chat of our Spring semester. Mark visited our PharmaU program to engage our startups in a discussion about opportunities for digital health innovation at SMPA. At SMPA (as with many pharma), the landscape for digital health innovation continues to evolve. Mark helped the startups understand how both internal and external forces are influencing change and the impact change is having on SMPA's appetite for innovation. Though market conditions are dictating the need for heightened scrutiny on projects, Mark emphasized SMPA’s continues to focus on opportunities that will deliver value, save money, and help get therapies to the market quickly and to the patients who will benefit from them. SMPA is currently developing their promising oncology assets, which is a perfect fit with PharmStars' current cohort of startups focused on "Digital Innovations in Oncology." 📣 Deep Dive into Day 7 of our BioEntrepreneurship & Innovation (BEI) program! 🚀 Today was packed with incredible insights thanks to our special guest, Michio Painter, PhD, Head Translational Medicines Accelerator (tma), who generously shared stories from his own entrepreneurial journey and extensive experience working with startups and innovative projects. 🔍Understanding customer needs: - Michio shared strategies for identifying and segmenting potential customers - We explored techniques to validate market needs and pain points - Michio guided us through creating unique value propositions for each stakeholder - We practiced articulating benefits tailored to different perspectives Michio insisted that these learnings are vital to ensure lifesciences projects are better, have more chances to secure funding and eventually reach patients and benefit society! 🌎 🎤 Solution Showcase: Our aspiring entrepreneurs presented their innovative ideas and their key customers, receiving real-time feedback from Michio and peers. A couple of weeks after the AMR conference, I am still reflecting on several key points that were raised: 📌 I've mentioned it a few times already but the scarcity of scientists and entrepreneurs committed to the AMR space is concerning. The exodus of talent is a significant challenge, because leads to a loss of scientific expertise and can hinder progress compared to other sectors. 📌 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 remains an obvious issue. Only a handful of traditional investors are actively investing in the AMR sector, with some focusing solely on clinical-stage companies. Yes, there are organizations like CARB-X and INCATEurope which are injecting capital into the sector, and their contributions actually extend beyond mere financial support to include expertise, mentorship, and overall guidance, which are invaluable to startups. 📌 Early-stage R&D in the AMR field is underfunded by an estimated $𝟯.𝟳 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲, according to calculations by CARB-X. Or at least this is the gap we should fill to have a healthy pipeline resulting in about 6 new antimicrobials reaching the market every decade. 📌 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 exacerbates the challenges faced by new businesses. Traditionally, startups receive mentorship through their investors; however, with few investors in the AMR sector, many startups miss out on this crucial support, which can significantly impact their success or failure. 📌 Even in cases of successful drug development and market entry, things can still go wrong! Many companies in this sector are susceptible to 𝗯𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗿𝘂𝗽𝘁𝗰𝘆 𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀. To put it simply, even if you develop the best antibiotic ever the constrains in place (which are necessary!) are aimed for it to be 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗦 𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗧𝗟𝗘 𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 to slow down pathogen resistance. Obviously, from a pharma's prospective this is no appealing and that's why it's crucial for antimicrobial' reimbursement to be delinked from sales! 👇 So, should we just abandon any attempt here? Definitely not, but this really highlights the need for targeted initiatives that support both drug development (push) and facilitate market access (pull) and only by addressing these dual challenges, we can combat antimicrobial resistance effectively. #amr #drugdevelopment #antibioticresistance #fundings
