Access control, authentication / strong authentication, single sign-on, password management, segregation of duties – these are some of the technical solutions used by organizations already today. #DORA exposes additional ones. The new or strengthened requirements refer to: 📌 identity lifecycle management, 📌 regular reviews and updates of access rights (including revoking!), 📌 account accountability in all #ICT systems (including shared “admin” and “root” accounts), 📌 remote and emergency access protection, 📌 monitoring and detection of anomalies. It means that all organizations, including small fintechs, are now facing a dilemma: to introduce additional IT (#IAM) tools or cumbersome manual processes and extra documentation, in order to comply with #DORA.

CrowdStrike’s 18th July 2024 software update which affected and disrupted many IT services across the globe including airport check-in systems, banking services, retail point of sale systems and healthcare services among others shows how vulnerable our interconnected systems really are. So what now? Well, continuous process improvement is one factor that every business cannot afford to ignore. Incidents such as these are a reminder that businesses need to continuously review current systems, then design/redesign, optimise and as much as possible reduce reliance on third party applications. It makes the difference between the inability to respond and being able to scale and adapt to new technological innovations, quickly responding to threats and system interconnected vulnerabilities whilst keeping systems and services running.
