I would venture to say that resource management is the hardest part of any asset manager's job. The pressure to “do more with less” can be stressful, especially if your target outputs increase faster than your available inputs. One resource that often feels the impact of this pressure is the O&M field staff. Even the best O&M personnel can’t be in two places at once and yet that is often what it feels like they are asked to do. This impacts small teams the most as the lack of manpower often means there is more work than hands to complete it. I want to tell you how a two-man O&M team decided to work smarter instead of harder. This team needed to identify downed solar strings across a 2.4MW system. Using a traditional inspection method of string testing or handheld IR would take at least a day or two, and that was just to find the downed strings! Add in the time it would take to document the issues and then remediate them this team was looking at spending 4-5 days to get the job completed. That all changed when they added a drone to the process. Leveraging thermal imaging and a bird's-eye view, we could swiftly locate problem areas in minutes instead of hours. I coordinated with both technicians via walkie-talkie while looking at the live controller screen to direct them to the location of downed strings. It was like a childhood game of hot and cold. By the day's end, we had identified and revived numerous problematic strings across the whole system, a feat that would have been impossible before in such a short time. I’ll be honest... jobs like this one are why I love what I do. Finding an inventive way to leverage drone technology to make people's lives easier is what it's all about. This two-man team can now accomplish in one day what would have previously taken them five days. That's what I call making a big impact with a small team! #solar #technition #drone
