This year at Christmas, SRL has chosen to support Give Food, a UK charity that’s making a tangible difference by combining data with action to address local and structural food insecurity. Through their innovative approach, they can track and showcase the impact of donations in real terms. For example, the funds from SRL can: Deliver 1 to 1.1 tonnes of food and supplies and provide a detailed online dashboard showing the weight, number of items, and calories donated, along with maps of food bank locations receiving the supplies. Every penny counts. With 100% of donations going directly to food and supplies, their transparency and efficiency are helping make a real difference in the lives of those who need it most. During our last community kitchen event, something remarkable happened. As we were distributing meals, we unexpectedly ran out of takeaway packs. Rushing to a nearby store to get more, we met Olamilekan a food vendor. Instead of accepting payment, Olamilekan chose to donate the packs to us. He was deeply moved by our efforts, something he had never seen in his community before, and wanted to be a part of it. Even if he was selling food , he didn’t feel uncomfortable about us giving out food around him. We salute Olamilekan’s generosity and his willingness to support his community. Now, imagine a world filled with more people like Olamilekan—where sharing and giving back are the norms, and everyone has enough to eat. This vision is within our reach, but it starts with each of us. Be like Olamilekan. We are delighted to announce that we are embarking upon a new corporate charity partnership with UK charity, Trussell. Trussell is anti-poverty charity and community of 1,400 food bank locations. They work together to ensure no one in the UK needs a food bank to survive, while providing emergency food and practical support for people left without enough money to live on. Working together, they aim to ensure that no one in the UK needs a food bank to survive. The funding being provided by Baxters, in the first year of the partnership, will support projects that provide tailored advice on money matters and support to people facing hunger and hardship, as well as supporting the charity’s general body of work. We are enormously proud to launch our partnership with Trussell and look forward to supporting their vision of a UK without the need for food banks and where everyone has enough money to afford the essentials. 🌟 Ever wondered what happens to a tin of beans when you donate it? Here's the journey of one tin from your hands to those in need:  1️) Buy a tin – It all starts with you! You purchase a tin of beans and decide to make a difference.  2️) Donate the tin – You drop it off at one of our collection points, knowing it'll help someone in need.  3️) We sort the tin – Our amazing volunteers sort and organise all donated tins by date and type, ensuring we’re rotating our stock effectively  4️) We put the tin in our community supermarket – The tin takes its place on the shelves of our community supermarket, where those facing tough times can access it.  5️) The tin then goes to those in need – Finally, the tin of beans ends up in the basket of someone who needs it, providing them with a warm, nourishing meal.    Every tin counts. T H I N K S M A L L 24—28 June is the UK’s biggest celebration of small charities. It’s a chance for small charities just like us to raise awareness of the essential role we play in our communities and to celebrate the incredible donors and volunteers that make our work possible.  Nottingham has a fantastic network of small charities; supporting our residents and their families it so many ways. It's hard to imagine a world without these charities who provide so much practical and emotional support to people of all ages. Unfortunately we have seen some doors close recently due to a significant reduction in available funding coupled with rising costs but also rising demand. Its vital to keep raising the profile of our work and highlighting our impact to secure our future. Small Charity Week is an annual campaign to celebrate and support the value that small charities add to communities. Small charities make up 96% of the voluntary sector in the UK and hold many communities together – providing food, safety, shelter, mental health support, and financial assistance and advice. This year the campaign seeks to highlight the transformative role that small charities can play in partnership with government to strengthen local communities. We now estimate that we would need to spend twice what we originally budgeted to spend on food this year to meet the ongoing need. This leaves us with a critical gap between the amount of food people in our community need and the amount of food we can provide. Referring people to other food pantries is not the answer, since they are all facing the same critical challenges we are. It is a very difficult and disturbing truth for all of us. While we are deeply concerned, we remain hopeful. We have a generous community, tremendous volunteers, and a skilled and committed staff. Together we can make sure people in our community have the most basic and critical of all needs met and that our neighbors don’t have to experience hunger.
