I see organizations hiring their first data analyst - with no idea on how to define success. The common thread is leadership teams want to invest in data and they know it holds strategic value for their internal teams - and even monetary value externally. And they want to dip their toes into a data investment. So orgizations put out a job description for their first data analyst: 2-5 years experience Must know SQL, Python, reporting tool 'Competitive' salary When I talk with business leaders making that first hire, they are very aware that it will involve this new person to dig through a data mess, capture the attention of uninvested colleagues, and cobble together reporting products from scratch. That’s a TALL order for early career data analysts. No one wins. And if this analyst hire comes in and puts everything in motion by sheer will and determination, they are a unicorn. Unicorns don’t stick around as the 1-person data team for long. They leave, data infrastructure and reports start to break, and the company scrabbles to hire another 1-person data team. There are a lot of skills needed to assemble a data capability. How is your organization taking that first step and how is it going?
