Last week I was on a call with a candidate and was reminded of how critical timing is when filling open positions. We all know this, but so often I see instances where timing kills a deal. The hiring process is complex and every organization handles it differently - which is why it's imperative to evaluate and consider whether or not your company is doing it well. To gain a competitive edge in hiring, consider these 3 key questions: 1. Is there a clear and reasonable timeline laid out for identifying and filling the opening? 2. How will you communicate that timeline to potential candidates? 3. Who within your team is accountable for managing the hiring timeline? It may sound simple - and, in theory, it is - but having this practice in place can really elevate your organization. Don't string candidates along. Give them the courtesy of respecting their time and you'll attract top-tier talent.

Hiring Tip: if the first candidate meets your requirements, hire him/her! Don’t wait for others who might not even be as qualified. Speed in hiring is a competitive advantage. It shows decisiveness and respect for the candidate’s time. A swift hire can mean catching a rising star. Waiting can mean losing them to someone else. Trust your hiring process and criteria.
