How the SkillBridge Program Works The Department of Defense (DOD) SkillBridge Program is an initiative designed to facilitate the transition of active duty service members into meaningful civilian careers. This program allows service members in their final 180 days of service to gain practical, hands-on experience with civilian companies through internships, apprenticeships, and specialized training programs. The SkillBridge program is structured around four key elements: 1️⃣ Duration: Eligible service members can participate in SkillBridge during the final 180 days of their active duty. During this time, they can work with a civilian employer for a period of three to six months, depending on the program’s setup. 2️⃣ Funding: The DOD pays for all service member salaries and benefits during their time in SkillBridge, allowing companies to host transitioning service members at no additional labor cost. 3️⃣ Eligibility Requirements: While most active duty service members are eligible for SkillBridge, they must receive approval from their command, meet criteria such as being within 180 days of separation, and have no pending disciplinary actions. 4️⃣ Application Process: Service members interested in SkillBridge typically begin by reviewing approved programs and submitting an application. Once they are accepted, they work closely with their command and their chosen company to finalize program details and establish a start date.
