For many passengers listening music is a must when flying. However, this is not the case for pilots. Not because they do not want to listening to music, but because they simply just cannot. Instead of music pilots listen to radio communications between airplanes and ground controllers. While flying they hop from one radio frequency to another in order to know the movement of the aircrafts around them. Music can be a distraction for pilots and flying the plane requires all their attention. 🎵 🎸 When your favorite musician goes to an NFL or MLB Stadium to watch a game, there’s a law which helps protect them, by prohibiting drones, helicopters, and other aircraft from flying too close to the stadium, unless pre-authorized by the FAA. Surprisingly, if that same musician is headlining a concert or festival at any of those same Stadiums, the law does not apply, due of how it is worded. (While it protects events such as the Tournament of Roses Parade, MLB games, etc, it doesn’t have a provision for music events). Thanks to Congressman Dr Raul Ruiz, who introduced a bill yesterday, the law may be expanded to include concerts and music festivals with attendance of 30,000+ people and help to make them safer. Who cares? How can public spaces be designed and used more attractively? Who is responsible for these spaces? Who decides what is organized there and by whom? In 2018, I conceived, planned, and implemented the initiative of placing pianos in public spaces at Alexanderplatz and Berlin's Washington Platz (behind the main station). This project has been part of a global movement to enliven public spaces and bring communities together through music. Recently, an article highlighted the impact of similar actions in France, demonstrating the positive effects worldwide. As illustrated in my header image, my project has received great recognition, underscoring the significance of cultural initiatives in revitalizing public spaces. For many people, train stations are places of transit, places you pass through on your way to somewhere else, but what if you add a piano to the mix? Suddenly the scene changes. Someone might sit down and start playing their favorite song. Others might pause to listen, maybe even join in with another instrument or start dancing. We have been working with the French National Railway Company to install pianos in train stations across France since 2014. Known as "Station Pianos," these instruments are open to anyone who wants to play. They don't just bring a touch of music to the stations, they give them new life and meaning, transforming them from mere stops along the way into inviting spaces to spend time in.
