Today is World Diabetes Day. In the U.S., 2% to 10% of pregnancies are affected by Gestational Diabetes. Gestational Diabetes usually presents after week 24 of a pregnancy. Because there are rarely symptoms, providers recommend testing all pregnant women so that a treatment plan can begin as soon as possible. Lori hated feeling overlooked, especially when she knew her experiences were more than pregnancy symptoms. But each time she went to the hospital or maternal ER, it seemed like she had to convince them of her pain and worry. Too often, she just felt like a number. Less than half of pregnant women know the signs and symptoms of preeclampsia, and others may not share their symptoms for fear of overreacting. This is exactly what happened when Lori was pregnant, and it’s what led her to become a preeclampsia advocate. Summary: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) occurs during pregnancy, with an estimated prevalence of up to 22.3% in Europe. GDM is associated with adverse outcomes for both the mother and baby, including complications during childbirth and long-term risks such as Type 2 Diabetes for the mother and metabolic syndrome in the baby. Emerging evidence also suggests a relationship between GDM and neurodevelopmental conditions in children.
