Researchers from Politecnico di Milano have set a new autonomous world speed record! On our ultra-high performance Bridgestone Potenza Sport tyres, the university team achieved an astonishing 285km/h in a Maserati MC20 Coupé – a new world record for a production car driven entirely by an AI system. Taking AI technology that had previously been applied to road tests, the team pushed the system's capabilities on the track – the runway of Piacenza San Damiano Airport – with our premium sports tyre maintaining the Maserati’s stability, grip and control. A huge congratulations to the university’s Artificial Intelligence Driving Autonomous (AIDA) and PoliMOVE Autonomous Racing team, which also holds the current all-time speed record for self-driving cars!

Watching autonomous cars race on an F1 track is a thrilling experience. The risk level associated with such races can be significantly different from traditional races involving human drivers. Autonomous cars are controlled by AI platforms that are designed to operate with high precision and responsiveness. The OEM manufactured the vehicles that provided an #L4 driverless minibus shuttle service at the recent #RolandGarros French Open tennis tournament (May 26-June 9). The shuttles featured WeRide’s full-stack, self-developed autonomous driving software and hardware system, and took about about 12 minutes to travel a 5km route between the stadium and car parking facilities. In April 2024, the Yas Marina Circuit hosted ASPIRE’s inaugural Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL), marking a significant milestone in the world of autonomous vehicle technology. 💡 Innovation on the Track Eight teams showcased their advanced coding skills and AI algorithms as their self-driving AI-powered race cars competed for a US$2.25 million prize. While the on-track action may have seemed subdued, the real accomplishment lied in the complex systems that enabled these vehicles to navigate the circuit autonomously. The car performance reflects the way it has been coded by the team. ⚡ Human vs Machine Face-off Adding an extra layer of intrigue was the "AI vs Human" challenge, pitting former F1 driver Daniil Kvyat against an autonomous car fielded by the Technology Innovation Institute(TII) which is a part of the Abu Dhabi Government’s Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC). This direct competition highlighted just how far autonomous driving capabilities have progressed. 📈 A Platform for Progress More than just a race, A2RL provided a powerful platform to accelerate autonomous vehicle development and adoption.
