Study: How Arts Agencies Helped Local Arts Communities Through The Pandemic “Arts agencies played a crucial role during the pandemic, providing support and advocacy within local government funding discussions, helping sustain the cultural sector during unprecedented times.” – Cultural Data Project An unprecedented level of federal funding made its way to the arts and culture sector as a result of relief programs during the COVID-19 pandemic. A large portion of this funding was distributed directly to arts organizations through federal programs, but a significant portion was redistributed by local entities.  In new research SMU DataArts explores how eleven local arts agencies advocated for and distributed this funding to their communities through document reviews, interviews, and qualitative data gathering.   The insights gleaned demonstrate the responsive and nimble ways these agencies operated throughout the pandemic, and the common tactics related to advocacy, process, and equity across all eleven cities may point to local arts agency best practices moving forward.   Download the report here: https://lnkd.in/gm9VtvZ8

Attending the Healthy Democracy Forum was an inspiring experience, filled with discussions about fostering inclusivity, engagement, and meaningful representation in politics. Senator Bernadette Clement shared her courageous experiences, emphasizing resilience in the face of adversity. Reflecting on an incident where she faced misogyny and racism, she delivered a powerful message: "I don’t want a thicker skin—I’m fine with the skin I’m in with all its frailties, sensitivities, and vulnerabilities.” Her hope-filled words resonated deeply: "Whenever it feels dark and stormy, spend time with smart, engaged young people. That's what gives joy and hope." It echoed the forum's mission—empowering future leaders and fostering a healthier democracy. The forum highlighted powerful initiatives like the Jean Collective, Elect Her and Campaign School and Operation Black Vote Canada, working tirelessly to ensure inclusive representation in local politics. Rawlson King, the first Black city councilor in Ottawa’s 150-year history, shared how representation drives policy, recounting his efforts to establish an anti-racism office in the city. The key takeaway: To build a truly inclusive democracy, we must engage youth, support diverse candidates, and address political polarization. On this #InternationalYouthDay, let's celebrate the incredible potential of children and young people to shape fairer and more inclusive justice systems.🌍   The 2021 Global Declaration on Justice With Children, an outcome of the 4th World Congress on Justice With Children, stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and youth leadership. Co-drafted by members of the Child and Youth Advisory Group (CYAG)—including Anas, Angela, Alexandra, Eni, Helan, Iliana, Macholi, Tajdar, and Whitney—this declaration was created with input from over 4,800 participants across 140+ countries.   This groundbreaking declaration emphasizes the importance of treating children not just as beneficiaries but as experts and central players. It advocates for meaningful justice for all children, ensuring inclusive access without discrimination, resilience during crises, and child-centred justice systems. The declaration's call for systemic child participation in justice underscores that their active involvement is key to achieving equal, non-discriminatory, and inclusive justice for all. We're out of the office today for Juneteenth. ❤️💛💚🖤 Juneteenth, observed on June 19th each year, marks the end of slavery in the United States. It commemorates the day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger announced General Order No. 3 in Galveston, Texas, proclaiming the freedom of all enslaved people in the state. This announcement came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth symbolizes the promise of freedom fulfilled for all enslaved individuals in the U.S. and serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for racial equality and justice. By learning from history, we can make more informed choices in the present. Juneteenth reminds us of the progress we have made as a society but also highlights that there is still much work to be done to achieve true equality and justice for all. It's essential to acknowledge the achievements and the challenges we face going forward. While it may be a newer holiday, its importance cannot be understated. Just like other holidays in our calendar, Juneteenth is a time for celebration and reflection, reminding us of the struggles and triumphs that have happened. Juneteenth can be a time to reflect on our past, celebrate progress, and commit to creating a more inclusive and equitable future. As the saying goes, "Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it." We all are responsible for creating a positive culture and safeguarding equity, inclusion, dignity, and respect for all.

The first ever Racial Justice Conference. My hope is it addresses equality and recovery. Part of racial justice involves treating everyone, regardless of their skin colour, fairly + equally. It involves hearing lived experience in institutions and workplaces. It involves pointing out racial injustice and revisiting our insidious culture of niceness (niceness does not always equal respect). It also involves recovery... How does one recover from a million paper cuts? Looking forward to this conference.
