🌍🧊✨ It's a wild idea, but what if it's just as brilliant... Have you ever heard of the 'Albedo' effect? That's the capacity of surfaces to reflect or absorb sunlight. Arctic white ice sheets REFLECT about 90% of the heat back into space, while the sea ABSORBS 90%. But Arctic ice is melting at an alarming rate. Fortunately, there are the 'crazy' ones with loads of ambition powered by idealism, like Tom Meijeraan and Fonger Ypma, the founders of Arctic Reflections, who traded their well-paid jobs to realise a moonshot. They aim to restore 100,000 km² of Arctic Sea ice. How? By pumping seawater on top of the ice in the winter, the ice can thicken more rapidly, creating a 'buffer' during the summer. They just returned with preliminary positive results from their first field experiment in Svalbard. Surely, they will face many challenges along the way, but efforts like these by people willing to take risks for the greater good are exactly what the world needs more of. #innovation #restore #arctic #ice #climatechange #GoodNews

Arctic Reflections and Real Ice are the two pioneers in Arctic re-icing ("ice thickening"), a technology that consists in pumping sea water on top of existing ice to slow tipping points and climate change.

Only fools pee in their only well. Since an Infantry commander in Alaska in the 1970's I have watched the catastrophic decline in multi-year sea ice. America really goofed in allowing the Federal government to violate the Constitution to build highways, mandate foreign oil addiction, make unwalkable cities, fund terrorists with oil dollars, mandate oil wars. The Boston Tea Party was a demonstration against the general government's mercantile transportation monopoly that triggered a war. To prevent rebuilding that path to war, the Constitutional Convention voted 8 states to 3 that states are sovereign over "internal improvements". Vote: https://lnkd.in/e4kmBX7X Ratification: https://lnkd.in/ex7Z4NEq Congress, 1792: https://lnkd.in/evRiwXmb Vetoes enforcing the Constitution: https://lnkd.in/gYB6-UM2 Wilson implemented mercantile transport monopolies with The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1916. FDR and Eisenhower expanded consolidation to rebuild 3 paths to war and 2 civilization killers. Ten of the last 10 Presidents declaring foreign oil addiction a direct threat to national security underscored by oil-wars since 1991: https://lnkd.in/eAh-XPCk

As a polar explorer, I’ve pushed myself into the unknown, battling harsh environments that test your endurance. Now, the Arctic itself is pushing back - not just at those who venture there, but at all of us. The feedback loops we’re witnessing - more open water leading to more evaporation, more precipitation, more snow, more melting - are overwhelming, and they’re no longer confined to the far north. They're in our garden. And while we’ve proven time and time again that we can endure, we must recognise that enduring isn’t enough. Not through geoengineering quick "fixes" that only mask the problem, but through bold policy changes that address the root cause. #ClimateCrisis #ArcticImpacts #WarmingPlanet #UKWeather #PolarExploration #Sustainability https://buff.ly/4dL0QJY

Ever wondered why the waters of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans don’t seem to mix? It’s a fascinating phenomenon rooted in ocean science. Where these two oceans meet, like at the tip of South America, they don’t immediately blend due to differences in water density, temperature, and salinity. These variations create a sort of “barrier” that keeps each ocean’s waters distinct. This separation is visible in some places as a stark line where the darker, denser Atlantic meets the lighter, less salty Pacific. Ocean currents and winds eventually mix the waters, but it happens very gradually over large distances. So, while they do eventually blend, the oceans retain their unique qualities for miles. It’s a beautiful reminder of the complexity of our planet’s natural systems! #water #oceans #seawater

New research led by ACEAS | The Australian National University post-doc Dr Rebecca McGirr uses gravity-sensing satellites to track the nuanced and sometimes unexpected impacts of water and ice on land on sea levels. "When we think of sea level rise, we picture oceans rising uniformly. But the sea is not like a bucket of water. It is bumpy and uneven. Gravity plays a vital role. Water is heavy. And unlike rocks, this enormous mass moves easily. Ice melts, snow and rain falls, rivers run, water evaporates and forms clouds. When ice melts, its weight shifts from land to sea and back again." In the gateway to the Arctic, fat and sea ice are crucial, intertwined and dwindling. And scientists say because of that polar bears are in trouble. In Churchill, Canada, the polar bear capital of the world, scientists say there are now about half the polar bears as there were 40 years ago. Read the full story here: https://gag.gl/jqwQnX
