Water Crisis Looms: 30% of Mexico City at Risk Without Rainfall" Mexico City faces a looming water crisis, with experts from the Autonomous Metropolitan University (UAM) warning that up to thirty percent of the city could face water scarcity in the coming months if the rainy season is delayed. The city, already grappling with significant water supply and infrastructure issues, is considered one of Latin America's capitals most vulnerable to such challenges. During a presentation marking World Water Day on March 22nd, experts highlighted alarming trends. The study, titled 'Alliance for abundant water in Mexico City,' emphasized the overexploitation of the capital's groundwater, contributing to a staggering annual depletion rate of 30 centimeters. Delia Montero, coordinator of UAM's Water Research Network (AgUAM), underscored the urgent need for geologists to investigate the correlation between groundwater extraction and the recent micro-earthquake surge in Mexico City. The water scarcity scenario is exacerbated by heavy reliance on the Cutzamala dam system, which only caters to thirty percent of the city's water needs. The remainder is sourced from overexploited subsoil, further compounded by minimal rainwater recovery efforts. Montero warned that if rain fails to arrive and the Cutzamala system dries up, districts like Iztapalapa, Xochimilco, and neighboring municipalities could soon face severe water shortages. Urgent action is imperative to avert this crisis. Eugenio Gómez Reyes, a researcher at UAM's Water Network, highlighted the mismanagement of water resources, with the basin of the Valley of Mexico receiving ample water but losing a significant portion due to inefficient drainage practices. The proposed 'Alliance for Abundant Water' advocates a multi-faceted approach to address the crisis. Priority actions include safeguarding water sources, promoting rainwater harvesting, replenishing aquifers, wastewater treatment, equitable resource distribution, leak prevention, and ensuring the fiscal sustainability of water management systems. Fernando Valdovinos, general director of Fixat consultancy, emphasized the importance of fiscal incentives to encourage investment in infrastructure for rainwater harvesting and groundwater replenishment. In the face of mounting challenges, concerted efforts are essential to safeguard Mexico City's water security and ensure sustainable access to this vital resource. #Mexico, #Mexicocity, #waterscarcity, #water, #investing

🚨 𝑳𝒆𝒕’𝒔 𝒔𝒆𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒓𝒅 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒍𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓 𝑺𝒏𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝑹𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒅𝒂𝒎𝒔 🚨 There's a lot of misinformation about these dams and their impact on salmon. Here's the truth: They feature some of the most advanced fish passage technology available. Don't be swayed by emotional arguments or misleading narratives. Let's focus on the facts and the innovations making a difference. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐌𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐰: • 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐝 𝐅𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐞: The lower Snake River dams rank among the most contemporary and well-maintained dams providing fish passage on the West Coast, according to a 2020 report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). With technologies like fish ladders, turbine bypass systems, fish screens, and spillway weirs, fish survival rates are above 95%, comparable to free-flowing rivers. • 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬: These dams meet and often exceed federal and state standards for fish passage. NOAA sets survival standards of 96% for yearling chinook and steelhead, and 93% for younger chinook. The dams consistently meet these targets, according to NOAA Columbia Hydropower Branch Chief Richie Graves. • 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐒𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐧: Even with optimal dam conditions, salmon face serious threats like hostile oceanic conditions, warming rivers, increasing sea lion populations, pollutants like 6PPD-quinone and microplastics, and predatory birds, among others. • 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤𝐬: There's simply no scientific evidence that breaching the dams would significantly boost salmon populations, particularly if the most significant factor killing our Chinook—oceanic warming—is not addressed. A 2020 Columbia River System Operations report found that breaching could: ✅ Double the risk of blackouts ✅ Add 3 million metric tons of carbon emissions annually ✅ Increase electricity costs by $800 million per year ✅ Result in a $540 million annual loss in regional economic productivity ✅ Eliminate 4,900 jobs ✅ Decrease social welfare by $458 million annually ✅ Add 79,000 more semi-trucks to the road, increasing CO2 emissions by 17,617,000 tons per year Preserving the lower Snake River dams helps keep energy costs low, which is crucial for heating homes in extreme cold and preventing blackouts. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬: 𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘥𝘢𝘮𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘮𝘰𝘯 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘦𝘹𝘪𝘴𝘵. We can support thriving salmon populations and maintain a reliable, clean energy supply for the Pacific Northwest. Don't be misled by sensationalism. Let's champion a balanced approach for 𝙗𝙤𝙩𝙝 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬. https://lnkd.in/gcrPTm3m

Water Re-Use As climate change causes longer and stronger droughts (and floods), the logic of allowing safe water re-use is going to spur regulatory development to allow it. Industrial clients of mine have at times been stymied in their desire to implement a novel grey water re-use program at a new plant because the country lacked the regulatory structure to license such a project. Now, Chile, a country prone to water scarcity, just issued a new regulationgthat sets the sanitary conditions to be met by graywater reuse systems. The new regulation also defines the requirements or background information that must accompany the applications for project approval and operating authorization regarding the design, construction and operation of such systems. #waste #water #sanitation #waterscarcity #climatechange #industry #environmentallaw #graywater #melonlatam #chile #latinamerica

🍁Canadian Groundwater Week 💧 We often hear about groundwater in many areas of the world however traditionally Canada is not one where we hear as often about issues. Living in Canada, we think of ourselves as having 'lots of water' and, while that may be true the challenges with our water management and future planning still exist. This year I've seen news stories from many provinces talking about low groundwater levels due to low snow pack this winter across many regions. The question becomes - do we understand our groundwater in Canada and do we have a plan? This article is from the University of Saskatchewan from 2 years ago but I believe is still very relevant today. Let's encourage more discussion about Canadian Groundwater Management Planning... #groundwater #canadiangroundwater #electromagnetics #airborneEM
