📣 “2024 will not be the year that we lose trust in AI” UK’s ICO 30.05.2024📣 Just yesterday I had the pleasure of attending a Lunchtime seminar with the UK Information Commissioner. John Edwards began his term on 3 January 2022. Dear colleagues in AI – is data protection an obstacle to business? A compliance exercise to avoid big fines, or a set of protection for fundamental human rights, enabling responsible research and innovation? The UK's ICO reflects: the principles-based, technology-neutral approach covers the entire economy, wherever we choose to deploy our models. We were late with addressing harms of new business models including those within the social media and ad tech sectors relying on profiling, microtargeting, tracking and search. We are committed not to stay behind this time. “2024 will not be the year that we lose trust in AI”, do you agree? With the discretionary capacity, and limited regulatory resources the UK’s ICO focuses primarily on advancing the data protection agenda in: ✦ AI and Biometrics ✦ Advertising Technology ✦ Children's Privacy We have already seen phenomenal work conducted in collaboration with Alan Turing’s Institute on Explainability, and guidelines for Ad Tech and Automated Decision Making. The key principles the UK is fighting for in our increasingly algorithmic society includes: ✦ Explainability ✦ Accuracy ✦ Security, and  ✦ Accountability It favours once again, a principle-based approach, rather than introducing comprehensive regulation as preferred by the EU. It is evident that many of these AI-related principles can be indeed traced back to basic principles of data protection including the lawful basis for processing, purpose limitation, accuracy and transparency. Let’s work together to operationalise this. The UK’s ICO has a dedicated AI team working upstream and regulating downstream with the industry to re-envisage the landscape of AI technology to be human-centric and privacy oriented. We are on the verge of the challenges brought by AI – I am talking to all those who are a part of and driving AI research societies – what we need is to work together on cutting-edge techniques which will allow us to train models more sustainably, develop and deploy models which are responsive to our rights.
