There’s an abundance of advice and lessons on leadership. This week, as I spoke about careers and leadership with participants of the #TandemLeadership program at, I found myself reflecting on my own tips. While preparing for the session, I came across an old handwritten note titled “Riikka’s Leadership Advice” — words I shared with my marketing team during my farewell speech at M-real (today #MetsäBoard) years ago. These notes, now captured in the image below, served as a foundation for our discussion. What followed was a rich conversation. Many of the questions raised by these young leaders echoed concerns familiar to more seasoned professionals. How do we avoid overloading our lives with too many commitments? How can we lead an area where we lack expertise (for now)? How do we handle energy-draining team members? And how will AI impact the leadership of expert work? My old advice still seems to hold — at least as a foundation for discussion. Many leadership basics remain, even as the world around us changes.
