Pittsburgh: The City of Bridges Affectionately known as the “City of Bridges,” Pittsburgh boasts 446 bridges. Long before the majestic bridges soared above the Three Rivers, Pittsburgh was a rugged terrain of deep valleys, creeks, and rivers, isolating many of the city’s residents. When the first European settlers arrived in the 1700s, they had to cross streams and climb steep hillsides just to travel around the region. To overcome these challenges, the settlers built wooden bridges to connect newly constructed roadways and span the rivers and valleys. As someone who has been working with zoning for some 30 years -- reviewing, permitting, writing, processing entitlements, and seeking variances -- this is an interesting if shallow read. It's too bad concerns like process steps, conflicts with other agency codes, and many other complexities are not covered. But I guess that is the point......and I will have to buy Sara C. Bronin's book. #housing, #affordablehousing, & #zoning

"Harnessing the Power of Patterns for Zoning Reform" is the title of a very interesting blog entry from the American Planning Association. The topic of zoning and best practices is constant and the January issue of Zoning Practice, "Pattern Zones and Pre-Reviewed Homes," outlines the key features of a pattern-book-based approach to zoning and explains how this approach can complement other efforts to promote missing middle housing." According to mizoningatlas.org, "Zoning laws dictate what can be built across the State of Michigan; they have a tremendous impact on our economy, the environment, and our society." Carlisle | Wortman Associates understand how zoning laws determine what municipal leadership can actually implement within their communities. And, as always, acquiring the most accurate data to support all initiatives is imperative. It's for that reason we'd like to share that on November 14 at 3pm, the Michigan Association of Planning, in partnership with Housing Next and the Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning, University of Michigan, is hosting an informative webinar to present the "Zoning Atlas, an exciting new concept (with the) goal (of mapping) the entire state of Michigan (to better) understand, for the very first time, the legal capacity for new housing in (Michigan)."
