A new groundbreaking study at Tel Aviv University shows that like humans, vultures prefer to “stay home” as they age, reducing the amount of social interaction they had experienced as younger birds. While young vultures are far more social, frequently moving between roosting sites and spending time with their contemporaries, this changes as they age, when they prefer to remain in the same roosting site. The research focused on 142 Eurasian Griffon Vultures (Gyps fulvus) in Israel, and according to TAU is one of the few studies to shed light on the behavioral changes in aging animals in the wild. #study #vultures #vultureshabitat #EurasianGriffonVultures #israelinnovation #behavioralchanges #aginganimals #wildanimals https://lnkd.in/dUg-gw7z

"Wolves started crawling around sacred texts, and devils looked like an animals with hair and a tail. We started thinking about animals in a very different way. That's really when we started to be at war with nature." Keggie Carew is the author of "BEASTLY: A New History of Animals and Us". Our short film featuring Carew explores the point in history when our interactions with Earth’s billions of other non-human inhabitants went awry. What does it mean to be human, what does it mean to be animal, and what does it mean to be both? Our new paper that shows the effectiveness of whale bubble nets is out today. I recently teamed up with scientists from the Marine Mammal Research Program at University of Hawaii at Manoa and the Alaska Whale Foundation to visualize their data that shows the use of bubble nets can increase their foraging efficiency to catch up to *SEVEN* times more krill!! The position and behavior of the animated whale are data-driven, from animal-borne sensors and allow us to see the bubble nets from a brand new perspective. Read the paper at the link below and be sure to check out the full video in the supplement: https://lnkd.in/gY7iwDcD

Australian Mammal Society Conference 2024 I had an insightful 4 days at Australia Mammal Conference last week held at the Melbourne Zoo. I have always wanted to attend and combined my attendance with catching up with family and friends in the cold state I use to live. Much research and many interesting people, in fact a few I had already connected with on Instagram and LinkedIn. Topics included: - Detection dogs to locate platypus burrows and oestrus cycles in Tasmanian Devil scats - Influence of fire and habitat of Potaroo’s and small mammals - Artificial refuges in disturbed landscapes - Recovery challenges for the Eastern Barred Bandicoot - The value of museum collections of the Dasyurid’s and taxonomy information it provides - Anti predator behaviors - Effectiveness of release and monitoring for the Chuditch at Mt Gibson - Impact of artificial lights - Camera trap monitoring of Rock Wallabies and much more.
