Advancing scientific research integrity can be similarly hard. Core scientific values are typically acquired as part of learning to be a scientist. But such acculturation is often insufficient when scientific values must be connected to other human values. Scientific methods by themselves can’t decide ethical questions—one can’t run an experiment to test a moral law—so philosophy must be brought to bear. However, uniting these very different methodologies comes with the same potential for misunderstandings and conflict as other interdisciplinary collaborations. Read more: https://lnkd.in/e5yBqRVe

How can we ethically balance autonomy and control in intelligent systems to ensure they enhance human well-being and uphold societal values? I just completed writing a research paper for journal publication titled, "HUMAN-CENTRIC ETHICS: BALANCING AUTONOMY AND CONTROL IN INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS," which aligns perfectly with my field of interest and my current job specifications. The main point of the paper is to answer the question through the introduction of the Ethical Autonomy Control Framework (EACF). This framework aims to balance the autonomy and control of intelligent systems while prioritizing human well-being and social values. It integrates insights from philosophy, psychology, and computer science to ensure that intelligent systems operate ethically and effectively. #research #Q1

What is research integrity? Research integrity is often misunderstood as merely a compliance tool that restricts academic freedom. In my view, integrity safeguards a process to produce new knowledge that is proven to be trustworthy and reproducible. What do you think?

I am extremely honored to announce that yesterday, March 5, 2024, I was awarded the Study Prize by "Comitato Unico di Garanzia (CUG)" of the Università degli Studi di Verona. This recognition was given to me for my master's thesis titled "Formalising Algorithmic Fairness and Unfairness in Legal Experience". The presented research provides an integrated vision that encompasses law, ethics, and computer science, with the aim of identifying, mitigating, and, where possible, eliminating the so-called algorithmic bias that may arise during the development and implementation of Artificial Intelligence Systems. This award represents not only a recognition of the hard work and dedication employed in my thesis but also an important validation of the urgency and necessity for multidisciplinary approaches in addressing the ethical and legal challenges posed by modern technology! #AlgorithmicFairness #ArtificialIntelligenceEthics #LegalTech #UniversityOfVerona

Interesting article. The abstract is a must-read. It is, indeed, "not easy to promote integrity in hyper-competitive academic environments that value high levels of ambition". "Codes and guidance promoting integrity are, however, likely to influence those for whom such values are not optional, while others simply find ways around them". The author concludes that the replication crisis requires robust ‘top down’ measures. https://lnkd.in/eUQMn_96

As part of my PhD involves reading the recent publications which is great, as it helps me massively in my day to day job in the industry. Additionally, I noticed that most people are looking for a condensed/summarized content for papers. I decided to actually have a place where I summarize all the papers that I read related to RecSys in general. I am interested in how to leverage LLM in ranking (not just by promoting), GCNs, filter bubbles and the ethical aspect in recommendations. Is there anything more in this field that you think can/should be read ? I am deciding my thesis very soon and this would be massively helpful.

In the research process, ethical lapses can undermine the credibility of the research, harm participants, and damage the researcher's reputation. In this series of posts, we are listing key ethical considerations and how to address them. Citations. When drawing on the work of others, it is essential to give credit. This includes direct quotations, paraphrased ideas, and data from other studies. In addition, when it comes to collaborative research, it is important to clearly define contributions and ensure that all participants receive appropriate recognition. Authorship disputes can arise if these issues are not addressed early on in the research process. Other conflicts of interest can come up when researchers have financial, personal, or professional interests that could influence their work. It's important to identify and disclose any potential conflicts. For instance, researchers should disclose who is funding their research and whether there are any potential biases associated with this funding. Additionally, researchers must report their findings objectively, regardless of any personal or financial interests. If a conflict of interest is present, it is essential to be transparent about it and take the required steps to mitigate its impact on the research.

2moThere are about 19 points for the 'consent' heading - so this is pretty important to go through.
