While different variations of closed swimming are effective for helping swimmers improve their pull, they can be made even more effective. How? Add some resistance. Using the forearm with a closed fist is one thing. Doing so with a parachute is something else. To make it even more effective, you can add speed expectations, stroke count expectations, or both. Swimmers will have to use the arms effectively. It’s a completely different game than slow swimming with closed fists. And of course, this is hard work. To go fast, freestylers have to kick well. What’s often lost is that they have to kick well WHILE they’re swimming. While being a good kicker is important, that’s only one step of the process. Using the legs while they swim is the ultimate goal, and that needs to be addressed specifically. To help swimmers improve their kicking while they’re swimming, I like to use several different strategies. I’ll do kick/swim sets of various types to help them learn to integrate the legs. I’ll have them swim with REALLY low stroke counts to get them to ride the legs. I’ll have them swim with DragSox. And I’ll combine these strategies. The ability to kick effectively WHILE they swim freestyle, and learning to HOLD it during competitions, is absolutely critical for swimmers if they want to go fast.

Resisted swimming is usually reserved for fast swimming. I love using it with drills, and I think it accelerates skill development. It provides swimmers clearer feedback about what they’re doing, and it requires more precise execution. That’s EXACTLY what we want when developing skills. Resisted swimming works in combination with just about every drill designed to improve just about any skill. It’s all about loaded appropriately and ensuring that swimmers are challenged, yet able to be successful. That added challenge is going to promote learning in a way that the doing the drill by itself won’t. And swimmers are going to develop some strength and fitness at the same time. What’s not to love? Today is #InternationalWaterSafetyDay, highlighting the need for drowning prevention and pool safety. Shockingly, 40 million US adults can't swim, with over half never having taken a swim lesson. It's crucial to act now by supporting swimming schools and programs. Let's emphasize the importance of swim education, starting from a young age, and ensure parents of young swimmers also know how to swim. Together, we can make a difference! #WaterSafety #LearnToSwim #DrowningPrevention
