In light of recent events, this excellent FT article sheds light on the perception of immigrants and crime. The research consistently shows that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than native-born citizens. Economically, migrants play a vital role in filling critical labour shortages and driving growth, particularly in aging societies. The issue of small boats crossing the Channel, while prominent in headlines, represents less than 0.5% of total immigration, highlighting how media coverage can distort public understanding of immigration. Published today: 'Restoring trust in polarised times: Immigration in the new parliament', reporting the latest findings from the British Future & Ipsos Immigration Attitudes Tracker survey, which has followed public opinion on immigration since 2015. Conducted straight after the general election, this research examines differences in attitudes between Labour, Conservative, Lib Dem and Reform voters and what that means for the politics of immigration in the new parliament. This wave also features new questions about perceptions of immigration. It finds that, on average, the public think people seeking asylum represent more than a third of total immigration (37%) when it actually accounts for only around 7%. LIBERAL DEMOCRACY IN AN AGE OF IMMIGRATION - PDF: https://lnkd.in/gqpJkE4u Are immigration and liberal democracy compatible in the current age Project of migration? Skeptics claim that immigration erodes liberal democracy in two ways. First, it triggers a widespread backlash among native-born citizens who vote for parties of the populist radical right that oppose not only immigration but also core tenets of liberal democracy. Second, the multicultural diversity that migrants generate—especially in the form of immigration from Muslim-majority countries—introduces into liberal-democratic societies repressive tendencies that undermine liberty. These claims, which are made with increasing frequency, stress bottom-up pressures: Natives and migrants actively push for policies that threaten liberal democracy. Mainstream political elites must then find ways to manage and tame these demands. The experiences of Europe and the United States, however, suggest that something else is going on: When immigration prompts threats to liberal-democratic norms and practices, it is mainstream political elites who bear much of the responsibility. Cities and towns that experience immigration often do not respond with backlash; when they do, politicians’ decisions about resources or intergroup dialogue tend to fuel illiberal responses. Moreover, although radical-right parties have become more powerful, voters in Europe and the United States have not become more opposed to immigration, and their commitment to liberal democracy remains steadfast. What has changed is elite accommodation of radical rhetoric and frames. The political and media establishment has elevated the salience of immigration at the expense of other issues and amplified far-right slogans, leading immigration opponents to increasingly prioritize the issue and to opt for populist radical-right parties as a result.

‘Tackling our immigration issues’ was the topic of this week’s The Industry Forum expert roundtable led by Stephen Kinnock MP, Shadow Minister for Immigration. The meeting was sponsored by Lowick a leading reputation management and public affairs consultancy closely aligned with Labour. Kevin McKeever the founder and managing director of Lowick welcomed guests to their new offices close to Tate Modern. Stephen Kinnock identified the need for an immigration system that delivers for the economy and builds social cohesion. The approach of a Labour government would focus equally on compassion and control. The discussion, with people from business and academia, ranged across current bureaucratic failings in providing statistics and processing asylum seekers, the serious skills shortages arising from the end of free movement after Brexit, and the desirability to take the heat out of the current debate. It is clearly necessary to concentrate on improving home office efficiency and unifying border control resources to combat people smuggling. Reducing the backlog of asylum seekers and the cost of housing them would have the major benefit of restoring much of the foreign aid budget to help with reducing some of the problems that lead to asylum applications. In summary, systematically addressing the root problems looks like the most promising way to tackle UK immigration issues. It would be welcomed by UK business and academia. #immigration #skillshortages #brexit #stoptheboats #compassion #refugees #competence #efficiency
