Hindustan Unilever, India's largest consumer goods maker, is reducing the palm oil content in its soaps by 25% as part of a broader strategy to mitigate commodity price volatility and decrease environmental impact. This initiative is a global first, with technology developed by HUL set to be implemented in other countries by its parent company, Unilever. India is one of the largest soap markets for Unilever. The maker of Lux and Lifebuoy stated that the innovation, called Stratos, took nearly five years to develop. Stratos will replace palm oil with a proprietary blend that includes plant-derived polysaccharides, vitamin blends, and natural fatty acids. This new formulation will enhance the product while containing 25% less palm oil and derivatives than current formulations. HUL leads India's ₹24,000 crore soap market with over 38% market share. In India, soap quality is often assessed by the total fatty matter (TFM), which measures the total amount of oils and fats in a soap bar. Oziva's Flat Growth Under Hindustan Unilever in FY24 In FY24, OZiva, the D2C nutrition brand acquired by Hindustan Unilever research centre (HUL) in 2022, recorded a flat growth with a modest 4% increase in revenue, reaching Rs 104 crore. This follows a significant 20% decline in sales during FY23. Despite a net profit of Rs 58.8 crore in FY23, which included a one-time gain, Oziva's losses remained consistent at Rs 44 crore in FY24. Notably, FY24 marks Oziva's first full fiscal year under HUL's ownership. Oziva, known for its plant-based nutrition products, has raised around $17 million from investors like Matrix Partners, Eight Roads Ventures, and Stride Ventures . HUL's acquisition of a 51% stake in Oziva valued the company at Rs 361 crore. This performance highlights the challenges faced by D2C brands in maintaining growth post-acquisition.
