Generations are reshaping the concept of retirement, viewing it as a transition rather than a point in time when work stops. People in their later years are seeking fulfilling, part-time opportunities that align with their skills, expertise, and desire to give back to the community. Some are looking for paid opportunities that are fun, expand learning, and develop relationships. Crafting a detailed transition plan and redefining the idea of "work" for the future are crucial steps in this process. Coaching can help you pave the way for an exciting second half of your life journey. #Retirement #CareerTransition #Coaching #SecondHalfCareer

« Before exiting your full-time career, laying serious groundwork is essential. » #Retirement isn’t always a bed of roses. ➡️Of course, many #people #love #retirement. Suddenly, the world is their oyster, especially if they have accumulated enough wealth. Given all these worries, it should not come as a surprise that #retirement can #strongly #impact #mentalhealth. Various #studies have #shown that #earlyretirement can #cause a #decline in #memory and #other #brainfunctions. In all, #retiring completely when we are still physically and mentally fit requires careful consideration. ➡️ For #those in #goodmental and #physicalhealth, #retirement #need not lead to loss or withdrawal. Instead, it #can #be an #opportunity to #explore new #interests and #identities. As we live longer, there is no need to stick to one career. A #portfolioapproach, #involving #multipleroles, #offers #benefits like #flexibility, #variety, #diverse #incomestreams and the #chance to #pursue #personalpassions. Last Thursday I was in my element educating students about the future of work. We spoke about career planning, in particular, our exit plan (namely, retirement)! There’s so much focus on starting out in a career or job. For example, we have graduate programmes, on boarding programmes, career coaching, career advice centres etc. But what about at the other end of our careers and planning for retirement? What about the psychological impact of retirement and winding down our careers? We shouldn’t just focus on the financial impact of retirement planning. We spoke about opinions on whether organisations and the government should offer more wind down and exit planning and support that allows people to mentally, psychologically and physically prepare for winding down their working careers. We discussed how work is part of our identity, whether people consider their work legacy enough, whether we should consider retirement at the beginning of and throughout our career planning. It was a tough concept for such young students to think about, but they really got involved. After all, they are likely to have the longest career of us all! #careerplanning #retirementplanning #retirement #futureofwork #futureofworking #student #careerdevelopment #thrivingatwork #wellbeingatwork

"Re-wiring not retiring" I recently wrote a blog post about the four mindsets we have seen in our #qualitative research with people coming up to #retirement age. One of those mindsets fits the quote above perfectly - it's an intention that some people have to make sure that when they stop work they will "explore other facets of life." whether that is learning a new language, volunteering, going back to the those piano lessons, maybe starting a #sidehustle to keep earning money. There often isn’t a plan as such. They just think that one day they will quit work and see how it goes. FEEDBACK PLEASE! In my post, I said that 'this mindset reminds us that not all retirement dreams are of rest and travel. This is another stage of life that people want to make the best out of.' I'd love to know what other implications for #retirementmarketing are relevant for this re-wiring not retiring mindset. What do you think? Thanks to Zika Milenkovic for the quote!

Midlife brings many changes, often quite challenging: an empty nest, caring for aging parents, divorce, or the end of a primary career—whether by choice or due to burnout. As they navigate these transitions and look ahead to the decades still to come, many people over 50 see the period after their main careers differently than past generations. They seek a path that’s neither full-time work nor full-time leisure, and many don’t see it as “retirement.” Some need to continue earning to support longer lifespans, while others want to stay professionally and socially engaged, giving back to their communities. With a wealth of skills, experience, and wisdom, they’re looking to make the most of their “longevity dividend”—the 20-30 extra years of healthy living that are possible today compared to a century ago. It’s this group of people who are discovering the CU Denver Change Makers program. Just as college once helped launch their first careers, they’re finding that returning to college can help them chart their next chapter. #changemakers #retirement #retirementredefined #purpose #unretirement #lifelonglearning #cudenver Rachel B.
