𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄? 💡 Many free-range chickens rarely venture beyond the shed, missing out on the benefits of the outdoor range. Despite having access to open spaces, some chickens hesitate to explore, which can lead to welfare concerns like feather pecking and overcrowding. But with the right strategies, we can change that. In his latest article on Wikifarmer , Ishaya Gadzama explores how early life experiences, thoughtful range design, and enrichment strategies can help chickens fully enjoy their environment, improving their welfare. GREAT NORTHERN HAS DEVELOPED A HYBRID-FLOW FARMING STRATEGY At Great Northern Salmon we put fish welfare in the driver’s seat in all decisions we make. When looking at trade-offs in closing up RAS systems, risks, and fish welfare one of our key priorities is to always have plenty of extra water for our fish. Great Northern Salmon is building RAS systems with high recirculation rates. The exchange goes through advanced treatment before discharge. But our mindset is to always have contingencies to reduce risk - one of our key strategies is to enable significant increases in the exchange of water in any given system at any time. We have plenty of cold water to deploy - we only use more of it when we need it. Combining the strengths of RAS and increased on-demand flows can mean the difference between life or death for fish if an unexpected event occurs. With us the fish comes first. High welfare standards is the foundation for high-quality salmon, and ultimately a healthy business. #RAS #Salmon

Constructing a pen for 1,000 layers is a significant investment for poultry farmers aiming to enhance egg production and efficiency. Layer cages provide a controlled environment that improves management and bird welfare. Understanding the costs involved in this construction is essential for effective budgeting and planning. #Poultry(Gallusgallusdomesticus)

Birds that are dead on arrival at the processing plant are a great example of maximum inefficiency. Significant resources have been invested to raise a bird, only to have it yield no return. "Dead on arrivals are also an important key welfare indicator,” writes Ken Opengart, DVM, PhD, 3 Birds Consulting, in an article for Modern Poultry. “And although they can’t always be prevented, it’s important to monitor and take action when the incidence of dead on arrival trends in the wrong direction." What is the number one overall challenge for the continued success of fish farming? In my book, it is ensuring good fish welfare. In the many years OptoScale has offered fish farmers data and advice on fish welfare, we have seen some fantastic use cases, where our data has led customers to “improvise, adapt, overcome” difficult challenges. The result? Significant improvements to fish welfare combined with very good financial outcomes. We have now launched our most comprehensive fish welfare offering so far: 🐟 A refined fish welfare monitoring solution. OptoScale still has the deepest view on wound monitoring, and now we also report according to the "Laksvel" standard for a range of fish welfare indicators, e.g. fin damage, maturation, deformities, emaciation, and many more... The image here shows how you can check the fin score of a measured fish. Easier than netting and evaluating manually, and much better for the fish! 🐟 A revamped web portal. Even more data is available at your fingertips, but with a (in my biased view) much nicer user interface But data is not all: we provide customers with insights we have learned from working across many geographies and customers. For me, the number one obstacle to capturing value from the data we provide is related to how each fish farmer is organised to use the data we provide to inform decisions. Check here for more info, and ask me or somebody else at OptoScale for a demo if you're interested. https://lnkd.in/dX9TW7nb What do you think is the most important development for the fish farming industry in the coming years? #fishfarming #growthcompany #joinus!

My editorial team and I were thrilled when poultry welfare expert Ken Opengart agreed not only to write an article for Modern Poultry, but also to focus on that critical period between harvesting and processing. As Ken put it, "If we consider that broilers and turkeys live fairly calm lives from the time they arrive at the farm until they are caught, events during the last hours before processing can be stressful, resulting in negative welfare outcomes if not closely monitored and managed." Be sure to take a few minutes to read this important article. It's chock full of practical advice you'll want to share with your team.
