📢 IPSP members are committed to help societies engage in just, democratic and sustainable transitions! In July we will highlight a few contributions by IPSP members in intergovernmental realms. Marc Fleurbaey (IPSP Coordination Council Member and “Measuring What We Value” Working Group Coordinator contributed to the Y7 Declaration (Youth engagement group of the G7). The Y7 reminded the G7 leaders of the key challenges of social inequalities, unemployment and climate change. The proposals put forward by the Y7 and the associated experts call for greater inclusion of populations, reinforcing deliberative democracy, the right of individuals to choose the content they consume online and, finally, the strengthening of the funding for the 2030 Agenda. Such proposals are in line with at least three working groups led by IPSP, notably “Measuring what we value”, “Ecological Rule of Law” and “Information as a public good”. It's time to address a critical issue: the glaring lack of involvement of local and regional governments in discussions surrounding the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). Today, at the Ecofin meeting, Ministers are convening to exchange views and potentially adopt conclusions on RRF implementation. Yet, crucial voices are missing from the table. New data collected by CEMR and the Committee of the Regions highlights a concerning trend: local and regional governments are being sidelined in the implementation of RRF strategies. This exclusion not only overlooks the insights and needs of communities on the ground but also puts the effectiveness and inclusivity of recovery efforts at risk. Below is a preview of the survey findings. The full conclusions of the consultation will be revealed at the CEMR headquarters in Brussels on April 16th. With robust engagement from local and regional actors, the RRF may stay within its potential to address pressing challenges and foster sustainable, equitable recovery. The next meeting of the Task Force will take place in Geneva at the International Telecommunication Union, 30–31 October 2024. Central to discussions will be: •Preparations for next year’s High-level Meeting on #NCDs; •Plans for the 20-year anniversary of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which entered into force on 27 February 2005; •The findings and recommendation of the recent joint independent evaluation of the Task Force; •How to improve the inclusion of NCDs and #mentalhealth into United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks.

Collaboration is embedded in the pursuit of public purpose – between and across tiers and spheres of government, with private, not for profit, and community actors, and through market and network instruments.      Collaboration came of age in the late 20th century, a consequence of changed global conditions and sweeping public administration reforms that re-shaped policy and practice.     Until now.      The current global instability, the uneven legacy of reform and the emergence/persistence of public policy challenges suggests we need a new approach.      The Irene Longman Oration, taking place on the 20th November is a timely opportunity to think about where we are and to draw inspiration from Irene’s preparedness to challenge the status quo to consider how we can shape what comes next.      The Oration begins by asking what is the ‘status quo’ in public policy and administration and draw on the enduring power of ideas about economics and security to provide an answer.
