At a catch up with some wonderful #innovation #ecosystem friends today and the topic of how to tackle Tropical Innovation Festival next week came up. Here are some of the #tips for maximising your conference experience that came up: 1. Set Clear Goals: Before you go, ask yourself what you want to achieve. Is it learning new skills, meeting industry leaders, or expanding your network? Go with a plan and as Tracy Sheen pointed out - lean on your network! 2. Research Attendees and Speakers: Know who's going to be there. Connect with them on LinkedIn beforehand with a personalised message and tell them that you look forward to catching up at #tif24 3. Prepare Your Elevator Pitch: Have a concise and compelling introduction ready. It's your chance to make a memorable first impression and it doesn't need to be about everything you do, just what you are at the conference for. 4. Bring Business Cards: Yes, they still matter! They're a tangible reminder of your encounter. Better yet, do what Kate Montgomery does, grab a selfie with them, get their number and text them the selfie so they can place you when you reach out post event. 5. Dress for Success: Wear something professional yet comfortable. You want to stand out for the right reasons. Take a leaf out of Donna Patane's song sheet - wear a fascinator! 6. Don't Skip the Food: Hang out where the food is. Or the coffee. Or just station yourself at the bar. But do it wearing your lanyard because it is a conversation in... that's how Tracy met Vu Tran. 7. Follow Up: After the event, reach out to the people you've met. A simple 'It was great meeting you at...' can go a long way. Remember, it's not just about collecting contacts; it's about building relationships. Attending a conference or professional networking event can be a game-changer for your career or business. I am not a fan of selfies, but I do have a system when I exchange business cards at conferences to help place people I have met. I take a photo of their card, and then use that as their photo in my contacts list - so that is the image I see for any incoming or outgoing calls. Also the QR code to share LinkedIn profile pages is a great shortcut to keep up your sleeve, as not everyone has a profile that is easy to find via name search alone.
