From SOMAC to Madison County EMS: Community members met with first responders during an open house marking the one-year anniversary of the transition. County officials also spoke about the expanded training opportunities for volunteers. Logan Zamzam ’26 said his EMT skills and those of the other volunteers have been boosted by the more formalized training. “We can do more interactive training rather than just lectures because we have the resources now.” Early next year, a new classroom will open to the public for courses on CPR, first-aid, and Stop the Bleed classes. https://bit.ly/3OoKuwr

So so important for all EYE’s to recognise and respond appropriately to signs of abuse, mistreatment or mishandling of any child in their care. All EYE’s are Mandated by law to report abuse either to the Designated, Deputy Designated Liason person, Board of Management, Tusla, Social Work Dept or An Gardaì. Do not stay silent, never get “used to seeing mistreatment”. We need to start fostering a culture that recognises, accepts and welcomes reports of abuse or concerns of mistreatment that are made in good faith. Instead of worrying what COULD happen to you for making a report, ( nothing, as you are protected from retribution for reporting in good faith) imagine what could happen if you don’t! 💔
Having followed this case, it is clear this nursery did not have a positive safeguarding culture in place. Why did other staff not intervene? Why was this staff member’s obvious dislike for Genevieve not picked up and considered unusual? Did staff actually know how to report concerns? Or was this staff member also the DSL? We must learn lessons from this tragic case. Does your setting have a positive safeguarding culture? Do staff know how to report and refer any concerns? Did the fact this staff member was the deputy manager prevent staff from reporting? Was she also the DSL? In your setting, do ALL staff, students, apprentices and visitors know: 1) what constitutes a safeguarding concern 2) who they report it to 3) how they can escalate a concern if not taken seriously, including if it is about a senior member of staff, or the DSL 4) how they can refer directly to LADO and know how to do this Let’s make sure this never happens again. RIP Genevieve 💔 #safeguarding #safeguardingchildren #whistleblowing
