Did you know? The Bourne and Sagamore Bridges were originally built as drawbridges in 1911 and 1913, respectively, during the dredging and construction of the Cape Cod Canal, which was only 100 feet wide at that time. Both bridges were electrically operated to lift for maritime vessels; however, navigating the Canal’s swift current while waiting for the bridges to rise proved to be very dangerous, limiting Canal traffic and leading to the bridges being rebuilt in 1933.
