I Landed a paid internship with a career influencer in my first sem of college! Ever felt like you’re just figuring things out while everyone else seems to have it together? That was me during my first semester of college. Lost, unsure, but determined. Then came the unexpected… An influencer I admired—a big name today—was looking for a Marketing Intern. I had: - No experience - No portfolio - Only excitement and a willingness to learn But I applied anyway and to my surprise, I got a response. One conversation led to another, and soon, I was working with them, shaping the content and marketing that helped build their brand. What I learned: → Skills over degrees: Sometimes passion and willingness to learn are enough. → Take risks: Opportunities don’t come with a perfect plan. → Growth is in the leap: The journey is just as important as the destination. Isn't it time we rethink unpaid internships in the creative industry? I’m increasingly disappointed by how many creative businesses still offer unpaid internships. In an industry where securing regular, paid work is already a challenge, unpaid internships feel like yet another hurdle—especially when they demand time, skills, and dedication without any financial compensation. It’s not far off from being asked to work for "exposure" by businesses or influencers. But let’s be real: exposure doesn’t pay the bills, cover fuel, or any of the other costs of simply showing up, let alone account for the time, energy, and skills we invest. Yes, hands-on experience and industry insight are invaluable, but so is a fair wage. We’re in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis. It’s not realistic to expect aspiring creatives to work for free while somehow supporting themselves on the side. Imagine if studios offered paid internships instead. Not only would it attract a wider pool of talent, but it would also support a more diverse and sustainable industry. Entry-level experience shouldn't be a privilege only accessible to those who can afford to work unpaid. What do you think?
