Join me today at the Accelerate Literacy Virtual Summit, for my talk on "Move from Reading Instruction to Language-literacy Development." Learn how to provide delayed and disinterested readers with a broader language experience - from sounds to sentences - to accelerate progress and provide much needed motivation. Learn how to create lessons that have students reading, spelling and writing multisyllabic words, phrases and sentences from day one. If you missed Mark Seidenberg or Devin Kearns talk they are still available. Mark talked about the balance between explicit instruction and implicit learning - how to quickly reach "escape velocity" in reading and not aim to fly readers all the way to the moon. https://lnkd.in/djPYjbD8

Why I think schools struggle with ensuring a robust literacy agenda that balances nuance without the trap of reductionism: - Tier 2 and Tier 3 language are seen as separate (a useful distinction is in danger of becoming a lethal mutation) - Lack of understanding in disciplinary literacy - and how to operationalise - Insufficient professional development for teachers - Limited exploration of language interplay Effective vocabulary instruction is a whole-school responsibility, not just a teaching issue. Every educator has a role to play in enhancing student understanding. Want to reinforce literacy skills beyond just phonics? Making words is a powerhouse activity that builds so much more! Making Words Activity not only teaches syllable division rules, but also phonemic awareness, blending, segmenting, and encoding. When students physically manipulate letters to make and decode words, it engages multiple learning modalities. This cements their grasp of skills from auditory processing to writing. Making words is a dynamic way to tie in spelling patterns, decode unfamiliar words, and develop phonemic awareness. Add this versatile approach to your instruction and watch your students thrive with foundational literacy skills. 📚 I am excited to share my research article with Mohammed Alzahrani, Ph.D. entitled "Facilitating L2 reading comprehension through L1 and L2 group discussions". In this study, we explored how incorporating discussions in the first language (L1) can improve second language (L2) reading comprehension. Our findings shed light on the efficacy of utilizing learners' L1 as a tool to deepen their understanding and foster meaningful engagement in L2 reading classrooms. 🔍 Key Takeaways: ⭐ Overall, L1 & L2 group discussions facilitate L2 reading comprehension. ⭐ Specifically, utilizing L1 discussions can promote a deeper understanding of L2 texts across different genres. ⭐ Pedagogical implications for educators on integrating L1 discussions in L2 reading instruction. https://lnkd.in/dYbZGznm #Research #Education #LanguageLearning #L2ReadingComprehension #GroupDiscussions #L1inL2Classrooms #Translanguaging #EFL #ESL
