How do boats move through the water when a sail is not being used? Engines and propellers. An engine rotates a shaft which has a propeller attached at its end. The propeller is positioned in the water at the tail end of a vessel. There are various designs of propellers, and all adhere to a few principles so as to produce motion forward or backward: - shape of each blade's curvature - speed of propeller rotation - blade pitch (blade angle relative to the shaft) Here's a great video to describe things from Oliver Hazard Perry Rhode Island tallship team: https://buff.ly/3Vk8iFw #props #propellers #Newton #bernouil #fluiddynamics #motion #STEM #STEAM #sailing #kidslearning #oliverhazardperry #tallships

Sometimes going back to basics is a good way to refresh core skills. Landing into a little grass strip called Pent Farm in Kent gives you a number of challenges. High ground to the east. Short, narrow runway on a slope. While those characteristics are challenges in their own right what they really mean is you have reduced options, especially if something goes wrong. For example, you’d typically avoid landing on the westerly runway as you’re faced with a hill at the other end. If I needed to go around in a low powered aeroplane like the Cub I’d struggle to out climb the hill. But the balance is taking a quite a tricky approach contouring the hill and applying side slip in the turn to lose height almost to the point of touch down as you can see in the video. That’s why the wing is down as I come around the corner, full left rudder and a junk of right aileron. I say tricky, everything is tricky the first time, but practice removes the anxiety and sharpens the muscle memory.
