Sovereign capability. Sovereign industry. Sovereign manufacturing. Sovereign space industry. Sovereign rights. Sovereign control. We keep hearing these terms, but for Australia, the ‘sovereign’ aspect continues to have little meaning, especially when it comes to trade deals with the US, which really are all about the US, and not much (if anything) about us. And alas, though completely not unsurprisingly, this has become apparent in the latest deal with the US over access to Australian space ports, with Australian company Gilmour Space making it very clear that we would get very little, if anything, out of the recently signed Technology Safeguards Agreement (TSA), thereby calling into question whether any projects with the US would be worthwhile. So the TSA, which seemed to promise a lot, appears to be just more spin. And as a longtime technology developer and sovereign industry capability supporter, that’s not just disappointing. It feels more like yet another disastrous letdown, even betrayal, by our own government. #sovereignty #sovereigncapability #spaceindustry

Such a shame to see this. However, it looks like we've identified the issue(s).... What are we going to do about it? Australia must develop its own sovereign space capabilities, relying on the encouragement of Our local space experts to continue developing Space based assets independently. There are of course other ways, but We have to start somewhere. #australia #spaceindustry #manufacturing #growthmindset #innovation #futurecareers #independence #letsworktogether

For Australia to develop a mature space sector with the urgency that is needed to keep pace with the rest of the world, we need to leverage our relationships with internationals - building partnerships with those that have experience and signing agreements with them to protect their interests and ours. The Technology Safeguards Agreement (TSA) with the United States, which this week has been recommended for ratification by the Parliament of Australia is going to stimulate launch and recovery activities and, more broadly, the Australian space sector. This is good news for our space sector. We only need to look to our neighbours across the Tasman to see how their TSA with the U.S. has played a part in growing the New Zealand space ecosystem. New Zealand had 7 successful orbital launches in 2023. The last time Australia launched an orbital rocket from our soil – it was 1967. ELA welcomes the progress made this week towards the ratification of this treaty and looks forward to U.S. rockets and payloads launching from the Arnhem Space Centre in the near future. #technologysafeguardsagreement #launches #AustralianSpaceSector https://lnkd.in/gZpSHRMZ

❓Is it the right time for #EU to focus more on the regulations rather than policy? Although it's an important one, it's easier to say but harder to do. 👇 What do you think about it? Let's discuss this in the comment section below. 1️⃣ If Europe is serious about playing on the same field as the US and China, it needs to create competition among its tenders. In the flames of competition, inefficiencies burn away and the quality of the work increases. The resulting technology is about as good as it gets. 2️⃣ If Europe is to fulfill its potential to be a #space superpower, it needs to consider putting its #policy of fairness to one side. A strong continent-wide space ecosystem is better for everyone in the long term, regardless of who wins the contracts. 3️⃣ There are structural #challenges in Europe, that are sufficiently great to put off potential space sector investors. The challenge isn’t so much a lack of money or appetite, but the conditions for investment, which are needlessly complex. European diversity, a main source of European intellectual and practical innovation today, as through the ages, also gives rise to varied legal systems, differences in the availability of capital, and tensions between national and commercial priorities. 💫 But Europe is also flirting with more competitive approaches, shedding the geo-return rule for the development of the 2027 IRIS2 #satellite constellation. This is a start. But it could do more: by daring to change its approach more radically and embracing competition. In doing so, it could boost its #defense, take more of the financial burden of NATO, and move one step closer to its goal of ‘strategic autonomy’. 🌟But this #legislation represents a significant step towards responsible space exploration and utilization, ensuring a cleaner and safer space environment for future generations Nevertheless, the European Union and #ESA are also moving along in the right direction with all burdens. European Space Policy Institute (ESPI) #strategy #spaceeconomy #spaceexploration #finance #investment #spacebusiness #spacepolicy #NASA #USA #CNSA #china #sustainability #spacelaw #spacedebris #innovation #spaceenvironment
Space is the new ‘Wild West.’ The EU is dying to step in and regulate.

The government has relaxed Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) norms in the space sector in a bid to attract international players and private companies. The aim to liberalize the FDI policy provisions in the space sector is towards providing easy entry routes for overseas investments in satellites, launch vehicles, associated systems or subsystems, creation of spaceports, and manufacturing of space-related components/systems. * 100% overseas investments are allowed under the automatic route for manufacturing components and systems/sub-systems for satellites, ground and user segments. * Up to 74% FDI under the automatic route in satellite manufacturing and operation, satellite data products, and ground and user segments. * Up to 49% FDI is permitted through the automatic route for launch vehicles and associated systems or subsystems. Beyond 49%, government approval is needed. The move is expected to increase private sector participation, create employment opportunities, and enhance creation of the space eco system being envisaged in the Space Policy. #spacelaw #space #techspace #spacepolicy #spaceinvestment #spacetravel

#SPACE 🚀 Boosting Canadian space launch capabilities The TSA creates a framework to protect sensitive technologies and intellectual property, including launch vehicles and satellites, enabling secure collaboration on space-related projects. This agreement enhances the strategic partnership between Canada and the United States and fosters growth in Canada’s commercial space sector by permitting the launch of US technology from Canadian soil. Hon. Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, said: “Canada’s vibrant and growing commercial space launch industry relies on its ability to collaborate across borders. “The conclusion of negotiations between Canada and the United States means that we are one step closer to finalising this agreement, which, when in force, will position our country to be a global leader in commercial space launch.” Innovation News Network https://lnkd.in/eYPiuHgu #space #canada #spacelaunch #spacetech #spacesector #USA

🌌🛰♻️🗑Happening now! "Space Sustainability Open Forum: Active Debris Removal", organised by Director Aarti Holla-Maini, #UNOOSA, and JAXA: Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. ⁉️ What would a space debris removal mission look in like practice? What types of technologies can be used? How are such Missions financed/ve incentivised? How can States ensure legal certainty around registration of space objects, and liability, around joint missions? These are some of the many 🔑 questions that COPUOS can address. 🇺🇳 Secretary-General António Guterres in his Policy Brief 7, noted the role of COPUOS and the ongoing Working Group on Long-Term Sustainability of Outer Space Activities to potentially "develop norms and principles for space debris removal that take into account the legal and scientific aspects of space debris removal." See the paper here: https://lnkd.in/dyqw7W9M Stay tuned for more information from the Legal Sub-committee via: #COPUOS2024
