Things I found fascinating this week... 🤓 We all have sources that spark our thinking at work, and since my early days in the design and building materials world, Edelkoort Inc Trend Union forecasts have been that for me. Lidewij Edelkoort’s insights into culture, aesthetics, design, and sustainability continue to inspire and spark my imagination. I recently watched the presentation by Rosa Pomar from the latest World Hope Forum Portugal and was fascinated to learn about the wool industry in Portugal and Europe, particularly wool’s unrealized potential. Here’s a surprising takeaway: Polyester holds 57% market share of fibre production, while wool makes up less than 1%. The result? Nearly 60% of European wool – about 3,000 tonnes – ends up burned or in landfills each year. With such a sustainable resource at our fingertips, this is a missed opportunity that raises an important question: why rely on petroleum-based fibres when we have excess supply of a natural alternative? This is an option worth exploring while we can, especially as several wool-producing sheep breeds face the risk of extinction. It was also intriguing to learn that wool can have applications in construction materials. With so much toxicity in our clothing, and in our built environments, it’s a reminder of how changing our perspectives and embracing natural fibres can lead to sustainable solutions across industries. For those interested in design, sustainability, and trend forecasting, I highly recommend checking out the World Hope Forum. There’s so much potential in rethinking our relationship with materials – and, with it, a renewed sense of hope for a sustainable future. #Sustainability #Fashion #CircularEconomy #WorldHopeForum #Innovation #DesignThinking #Wool https://lnkd.in/g5xinPJ4

The fashion and construction industries face immense sustainability challenges, from over-extracting natural resources to severe environmental impacts during production. Fashion alone contributes 3-8% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and 9% of microplastic leakage into our oceans. Given brand sustainability pressures, the global appetite for alternative materials is on the rise, especially in the luxury sector. 👗 Meanwhile, the construction industry accounts for 39% of global carbon emissions, heavily relying on fossil-based materials and energy. Although the major challenges are in energy efficient infrastructure and carbon footprint of building materials such as concrete and steel, sustainability in interior design is a growing matter. 🛋 SQIM, is transforming these industries with breakthrough solutions rooted in mycelium — nature’s master recycler. 🍄 Using the unique biological properties of fungi, SQIM has developed a circular business model that converts residual substrates into high-value materials with minimal energy input. ⚡ Meet EPHEA™ and MOGU™: SQIM’s flagship innovations lead the charge in sustainable material development. 🌱 EPHEA™ is not just a leather alternative; it's a superior material that meets the highest luxury standards. With a focus on reducing waste, it offers a sustainable option for fashion and accessory industries without compromising on quality. 🎶 MOGUTM️™ introduces acoustic panels and 100% bio-based flooring systems crafted entirely from mycelium and upcycled textile waste, providing a pioneering, eco-friendly choice for construction and interior design. Key Achievements with SQIM: ✅ 86% reduction in GHG emissions ✅ 100% biodegradable EPHEA raw materials ✅ 100% renewable energy-powered processes By merging science with sustainability, SQIM is driving meaningful change. Together we’re paving the way toward a more sustainable and circular economy, setting new standards in the materials sector. Together, we’re making a lasting impact on our planet. 🌍 #circulareconomy #greenbuilding #mycelium #innovation

There is a slow but significant shift taking place in the design industry. Driven by the growing awareness of environmental issues and the need to adopt sustainable practices, designers are starting to look to alternative materials as a solution for reducing waste and promoting a #circulareconomy. The societal and planetary impact of design was a major focus at Decorex Africa Cape Town 2024. From bioplastics made from algae to chairs made with waste paper, these are some of the future-forward materials which caught our eye 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d5xEtm-T

Yesterday, I attended the event "ECODESIGN AND DECARBONIZATION: measuring and reducing impact" (ECODESIGN E DECARBONIZZAZIONE: misurare e ridurre l'impatto), organized by SustainMe Hub in collaboration with Designtech, held at Co-Factory in Milan, Italy. The panelists shared valuable insights on how they are incorporating sustainable design practices. Through the application of ecodesign principles, careful material selection, and the integration of technology to optimize manufacturing, they highlighted the necessary pivot that companies and brands must make toward sustainability. Here are the key takeaways I gathered, both from the panel and the side conversations I had with the panelists: - Erika Francescon (Sustain Me): Emphasized the need for a holistic approach to sustainability, with professionals from diverse fields—design, social impact, and materials—working together to promote comprehensive solutions. - Maurizio Dallan (Ecoesedra Sustainable Design): Stressed the critical role of the design phase in reducing a product’s environmental impact. He accentuated the importance of applying ecodesign principles and educating clients on the long-term effects of their products. - Nicola Girotti (Pininfarina): Shared as example how Pininfarina approached the design of a sustainable home coffee machine, featuring recycled and recyclable aluminum, a repairable design (alining with the upcoming EU right-to-repair laws), and a capsule system that reduces waste. - Ivan Gianluca Bonvini (LEBA1974 srl): Explained the challenge of recycling aluminum due to coatings and introduced a silica-based, durable coating that preserves aluminum’s recyclability. - ELENA LAZAR 🔗 (Innovation System - Strategie per l'automazione e l'efficienza energetica): Discussed how technology can monitor energy consumption and production in real time. Her system, which integrates Industry 4.0, can be tailored to client needs, helping reduce carbon footprint and track inefficiencies across a product’s life cycle. Events like this highlight the urgent need for companies in Italy to incorporate SDG goals into the design phase of their products and proactively align with upcoming EU regulations aimed at achieving the 2030 Sustainability Goals. Stay tuned for next week's return of my newsletter, Circular Furniture 101. I'll be discussing Ecodesign in furniture, focusing on how its principles can be applied during the design phase and the positive impact this has on the product and its entire life cycle. #ecodesign #sustainabledesign #sustainblematerials #circulareconomy #italiandesign

The future of design is based on the research for new sustainable materials! 💚 From Monday 15 to Sunday 21 April, we will be at the Milano Design Week at SuperstudioPiù in via Tortona 27 in the Materially Now exhibition space. Through the process of plastic enrichment coming from urban waste collection, we produce certified and traced post-consumer raw materials that are reintroduced into the high-performance durable goods supply chain. The technologies employed combine different percentages of recycled raw materials with virgin raw materials, additives, mineral fillers and reinforcing fibres within the formulations. This mix creates a high performance resin, particularly visible in the Naturally Inspired line, materials that recall the natural characteristics of elements found in nature such as sand, stone and marble. ♻️ Do you want to find out more about Sirmax? 📆 We look forward to seeing you at Materially NOW at our presentation on Wednesday 17 April, 12 p.m. at Superstudio Più, via Tortona 27, Milan. 👉 Register here https://lnkd.in/g7FDnnzR! #sirmax #proximitycompounding #sustainability #hightechplastics #plasticrecycling #sustainableplastic #mdw24 #MateriallyNOW #Materially #fuorisalone2024
